Suburban streets surrounded by a 14,000-acre lake
Rolling hills reflect onto the water in Priest Lake Park, a neighborhood that feels like a “mini vacation” 15 miles outside Downtown Nashville, according to local Realtor Michael Dendy. Kids build sandcastles by the banks, and summer afternoons are marked by the smell of hot dogs on charcoal grills. Spanning over 14,000 acres and surrounded by miles of protected wildlife, Percy Priest Lake serves as the home base for Vanderbilt University’s Sailing Club, the Nashville Rowing Club and the Tennessee Boat Club. It’s also a popular destination for fishermen, who cast their lines for large and small-mouth bass. “You’ve got the water and beautiful mountains in the background. Who wouldn’t want to see that every day?” says Dendy, noting, “One thing to keep in mind is that the lake season is longer in Nashville because the weather holds out – it’s not going to be year-round as it would be in, say, California. But you’ll get more out of your time on the water here, being in the south.” Although Priest Lake Park is a solid half hour from Music City attractions (depending on traffic), staples like groceries and gas are less than 5 minutes away along Smith Springs Road. Ultimately – in the words of Dendy — “It’s really great if you’ve always wanted the lake lifestyle,” one where residents store fishing poles and kayaks in their sheds.
1970s-era subdivisions and single-family homes in the Colonial style
Although the banks of Percy Priest Lake have become a destination for seasonal campers and hikers from all over Tennessee, Priest Lake Park is a neighborhood occupied (almost entirely) by year-rounders — “It’s more local use,” says Autumn Faughn, a Real Estate Consultant at Compass and Nashvillian since 2011, and vacation rentals are few and far between. Here, 1970s-era Colonial-inspired townhouse units in communities like the Harbour Town Subdivision hover in the mid-$200,000s and sometimes reach close to $300,000. Single-family homes, a mix of split-levels, ranch-styles and Colonials with Greek-inspired columns, typically fall between $350,000 and $500,000. Most have attached garages, and streets here are quiet enough for peaceful bike rides. Although the hills can present a challenge to some pedallers.

A shopping plaza off Old Smith Springs Road
Shopping and dining options within Priest Lake Park are mainly concentrated along Smith Springs Road, which eventually merges with Route 41. Betty Lou’s Lounge is a neighborhood institution, and menu items include jalapeno poppers, corn dogs and chicken wings. Walls are decorated with photographs of country stars, and there’s a regular schedule of billiard tournaments, karaoke nights and line dancing. Nearby, locals can pick up crab rangoon and chicken lo mein at China Springs and stop by Comptons Foodland for groceries. The Tanger Outlets, home to over 60 stores including Gap Factory, J.Crew Factory and Ralph Lauren, are about 15 minutes away via Anderson Road.

Swimming, lakeside picnics and horseback riding at Camp Widjiwagan
According to Dendy, “There are so many places to hike, plenty of boat and jet ski rentals, just a great opportunity to get out on the water.” At Anderson Road Day Use Beach, the sound of portable stereos and kids splashing in the sectioned-off swimming area fills most weekends. Dogs are welcome, and picnic shelters provide plenty of space for birthday parties and family reunions. There’s also the Anderson Road Fitness Trail, which extends a mile and a half near the lake’s rocky shores. And at Smith Springs Park find parking, a boat ramp for kayakers and space for fishing. YMCA Camp Widjiwagan is nearby, offering day and sleepaway options for youth aged five through 17. At the onsite equestrian center, kids can take private lessons and learn how to properly care for horses.

Classes at Smith Spring’s Community Center and a nearby water park
At Smith Spring’s Community Center, enroll in dance workshops or parenting classes, shoot hoops on the court or do laps in the swimming pool. Daily fees for adults are $3 — for kids, it’s $1.50. The facility also hosts after-school programs and events like Easter Egg Hunts and chili cook-offs. Faughn also recommends checking at Nashville Shores, a water park off Bell Road. “There’s a ton of restaurants over there that support that too,” she says, highlighting Shipwreck Cove, which is popular with boaters. City attractions like the Grand Ole Opry and the Country Music Hall of Fame are both under 15 miles — about 30 minutes — away.
Smith Spring Community Center was designed by local architecture firm Hastings Architecture.

Interstate access and the Nashville International Airport
According to Faughn, “You’ll find that you can head one direction to get to [Interstate] 24 and the other to get to 40,” and highway access makes commuting between this lakeside neighborhood and Downtown Nashville relatively easy. Along the way is Nashville International Airport, and it’s not uncommon to see white trails from jet engines overhead. Hundreds of flights take off daily, with some flying direct across the Atlantic to London. Access medical care at TriStar Southern Hills, about 10 miles away along Smith Springs Road or head to larger facilities near Vanderbilt University.
