Fittingly named for its beachfront access
Named after the Roman god of the sea, the Jersey Shore community of Neptune might as well be called Terra, after the goddess of the land. The large township stretches from Ocean Grove's seashore into Monmouth County's interior, giving residents access to both the iconic Garden State Parkway and the famous Ocean Avenue. Homebuyers can opt for the quiet of inland suburbia or the summer bustle of the Jersey Shore when moving into this large town. With competitive home prices and a diversity of housing styles and living experiences, Neptune stands out as one of the Shore's most exceptional locations with a unique history as well. Realtor Cori Dunphy of RE/MAX Central says, "Ocean Grove was originally founded when Reverend Osborn, with a group of Methodist ministers, set out to find a permanent camp meeting place on the Jersey Shore." Ocean Grove grew into a center for pilgrims and tourists, and Neptune grew rapidly.

A classic beach town shopping strip
For stocking up on groceries or home necessities, a plaza north of Neptune provides residents with Target, Costco and other national retailers. However, for local shopping and eating out, "Main Avenue is the best part of town, with so many little shops and places to check out," Dunphy says. Among the shops of Main Ave is Dale and Dollops, a vegan restaurant specializing in meat and dairy-free imitations of classic American breakfast and lunch items. Tino's Artisan Pizza Co. is across the street and serves gourmet pizza creations and decadent salads in a cozy and industrial setting. As expected in beach towns, novelty shops, cafes, and ice cream parlors are popular in the shopping hub, as well as seafood restaurants that sell fresh catch of the day, like SeaGrass Restaurant.

Beaches, skateparks and forests to explore
Aside from getting outside at the beach, residents can visit one of many parks in Neptune. Sunshine Village Park is where to find boarders enjoying the skate park and half pipe. Also home to basketball courts, a large playground and open fields with soccer nets, the spot is busy on the weekends and after school. People can head to the 946 acres of dense woods and trails at Shark River Park for hiking and mountain biking. Paths lead to fishing spots and fields of deer, and the location is popular for cross-country skiing in the winter. Just two blocks from the beach, Founders Park makes up for its small size with beautiful views of Wesley Lake. Connected to walking trails and a footbridge over the canal-like water, it imitates a European atmosphere reminiscent of the channels in Amsterdam or Venice.

Large lawns or large porches
Seemingly part of two different worlds, housing design varies greatly depending on where one lands in the township. In the western, inland part of the neighborhood, ranches and bilevels sit on spacious tree-filled lawns with privacy fences, usually bordering inground pools, sheds and swing sets. While these homes offer more yard space, they sell for significantly less than the houses in the eastern end of Neptune, going as low as $350,000 for an old home needing some love to the median price of $500,000. "Ocean Grove is on the National Register of Historic Places, with Victorian architecture and beautiful beaches," Dunphy says. The neighborhood's beachside avenues feature late 19th-century residences built in Victorian and Dutch Colonial styles. Priced upwards of $2 million, the tightly packed houses offer colorful vinyl siding and porches that span the width of the building, taking advantage of the sea air of the nearby Atlantic. Though limited, some townhouses available in Neptune range in price from $200,000 to $800,000 depending on size, age and location.
Victorian homes built in the late 1800's are now popular vacation rentals.

Plenty of ways to get to work
One of Neptune's best features is its commutability. Buses run along Corlies Ave and Asbury Ave, and aside from the occasional traffic near the beach, the neighborhood is primarily free from congestion. Commuter trains are nearby, and Newark Liberty International Airport is about 45 miles north.
