Northside New Bedford living
On the far north side of New Bedford, between a swath of preserved, thickly wooded wetlands and a busy highway, Pine Hill Acres offers a peaceful and secluded lifestyle without sacrificing a quick commute downtown. “In this area, getting near Acushnet, you’re trending towards quieter communities and more quaint neighborhoods,” says Realtor Ellie Wickes of Sotheby's International Realty in Westport, who has more than 20 years of experience in the local real estate market. Lamacchia Realty’s Katrina Carmo, a Realtor with nearly 5 years of experience working with clients here, agrees. “It’s a quiet, single-family residential neighborhood, with mature homeowners,” she says, adding that it checks all the boxes for suburban living. “It’s just a nice place to be.”

20th-century suburban homes
Most homes in Pine Hill Acres were built between the 1960s and ‘70s, with a few as new as the late ‘80s. Carmo says the community is visually cohesive, with split-level, Cape Cod and ranch-style homes that look very similar to one another. The gently curved residential streets, lined with neatly trimmed lawns and towering trees, connect only to Phillips Road. The only traffic here stems from residents. Monica Donnelly, a New Bedford local and Realtor with The Real Estate Collaborative, says Pine Hill Acres' combination of quiet and convenience is what appeals most to homebuyers. “New Bedford has several distinct areas. There are some areas that are definitely not desirable, but the west end and the north end are the most desirable,” Donnelly says. As a result, Homes in Pine Hill Acres typically sell after only 21 days on the market, 23 days faster than the national average. Prices start at around $360,000 and can go up to about $540,000.

Students in the Magnet Academy take specialized classes in civics and global issues. They also complete a senior-year capstone project and at least 120 hours of community service.

Secret hiking trails in the Acushnet Cedar Swamp
Designated a National Natural Landmark in 1972, the Acushnet Cedar Swamp sprawls across nearly 2,000 acres just southwest of Pine Hill Acres. It’s one of the largest and most impenetrable Atlantic white cedar swamps in the state, but for those who know where to look, it’s a peaceful place to hike. There are two entrances to rustic, packed-earth paths through the preserve. One is on the west side, off High Hill Road in North Dartmouth. The other is in New Bedford at Turner Pond. Explorers are advised to take precautions during the rainy season, though, as the trails are known to flood. Pine Hill Park features a playground and two lighted basketball courts surrounded by woods off Phillips Road, near the middle of the neighborhood. Brooklawn Park, an 85-acre sports complex with a skate park, splash pad and more, is less than 4 miles southeast, or about a 10-minute drive.

Acushnet Avenue shopping and dining
The corner of Acushnet Avenue and Ashley Boulevard, just a couple miles southeast, is home to a cluster of retailers and restaurants, from Trucchi’s Supermarket to Honey Dew Donuts. Margaret’s Boutique, a formal womenswear shop, has been in business here for more than 30 years. Nearby Mikey B’s serves classic New England fare, from lobster to burgers. The family-owned eatery, opened in 2009, makes a habit of supporting local organizations like the Rotary and Lions clubs. About a mile north on Acushnet Avenue, Café Roma is a popular spot for Italian-American fare and seafood.
Pine Hill Park is a mixed zoning area with plenty of job opportunities.
Far north New Bedford, but minutes from downtown
Downtown New Bedford is about 8 miles from here. In light traffic, it’s a 15-minute drive southeast past Interstate 195 and U.S. Route 6. Massachusetts Highway 140 curves along the east side of Pine Hill Acres, running south toward I-195. The highway parallels Acushnet Avenue, a main road running north-south through town. Acushnet is lined with Southeastern Regional Transit Authority bus stops. There are no pedestrian crossings connecting Pine Hill Acres across Highway 140 to Acushnet Avenue, and most bus stops are 2 to 3 miles away, so the neighborhood is largely car-dependent. New Bedford Regional Airport is about 4 miles south.
