Born on the bayou
While not a household name, Bayou St John played a vital role in the birth of New Orleans. “It actually predates the city,” says Dylan O’Donnell, owner and operator of Dr. Gumbo Tours. “It was the original portage for Native Americans coming into the city.” Occupying an area less than half a square mile and holding less than 1,800 homes, the neighborhood is a small but historic sub-district of the greater Mid-City area. “It’s very dog-friendly and pedestrian-friendly,” says O’Donnell. “It’s an eclectic mix of residents.” Similar to its mix of personalities, the neighborhood offers a collage of architectural styles along the bayou of its eponymous name.
Bayou St John is just minutes away from the French Quarter and Central Business District.

From French shotguns to French Colonials
As one of the oldest neighborhoods in New Orleans, Bayou St John holds some of the city’s most historic homes. Along its mostly gridded streets, the neighborhood is a place where French colonial homes mingle with every style from Arts and Crafts bungalows to newly built modern homes. Driveways are a rare commodity in the neighborhood, but street parking is plentiful. Prices can range from $285,000 for a one-bedroom shotgun house to $1.6 million for a well-maintained three-bedroom French colonial.

Parkway's famous poor boy sandwich
Just two miles away, the world-famous French Quarter can be reached by streetcar from Canal Street, placing its shops and restaurants just a hop away. Within the neighborhood, many local restaurants, such as Parkway Bakery & Tavern, are well-known throughout New Orleans. “A lot of food critics come through New Orleans,” says O’Donnell. “And they all agree that the best poor boy is from Parkway, right here in Bayou St John.”

A little bayou neighborhood with big festivals
The neighborhood is home to several festivals throughout the year. Each May, residents grab their floaties for Bayou Boogaloo and jam to live music as they float on the water. “Bayou Boogaloo is a big draw” says Dominic Sgro, owner of Catahoula Tattoo. “Then there’s Jazzfest. That's the big one for music.” Known as Jazzfest by residents, The New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival is “a world-famous music festival,” says O’Donnell. “It’s held at the second-oldest continually operating racetrack in the country, and it probably draws hundreds of thousands of people over the weekend.”
Local Easton Park, world-class City Park
One of the world’s largest metropolitan parks, City Park, offers residents such sites as the New Orleans Museum of Art and the Besthoff Sculpture Garden, less than a mile and a half from the neighborhood. But the neighborhood’s smaller green spaces—Easton Park, Lafitte Greenway and others—offer athletic fields and play equipment just a short walk from anywhere in the neighborhood.

Buses, cars and streetcars
Public transportation is limited to streetcars and Regional Transit Authority buses, but both options make other districts of the city a short trip away. Whether driving the main roads of Esplanade Avenue or Canal Street or taking one of the two streetcar lines servicing the area, getting around from the centrally-located Bayou St John seems to take no time at all.

The residents of my neighborhood are always willing to lend a helping hand. The atmosphere, however is something that isn't well suited for me but maybe for others. The level of friendliness is somewhat overwhelming for me considering I'm a person that prefers to stay to them-self. I like the fact that I can get around easy via bike, but I would rather do so in a less populated area. In short the environment is ideal for a lot of people , just not for me.
