Rural-living on the outskirts of New Richmond
In the spring, millions of birds migrate to the upper Midwest — and the rural town of Stanton in St. Croix County. Home to more than five wildlife refuges, birdwatching and hunting are routine as the area is the primary habitat for waterfowl: ducks, geese and swans. “It’s a draw for people who like the outdoors,” says Jeremy Moe, Realtor with WESTconsin Realty, LLC. Stanton is known for its secluded feel, ample farmland and proximity to the Twin Cities. “Sixty-five percent of people here commute to the Twin Cities,” says Moe, who has lived in the area his whole life. Local mainstays like Laurel’s Supper Club and the annual Fun Fest in Downtown New Richmond contribute to the active community-oriented atmosphere that makes daily commutes into work worthwhile. “It’s a laid-back farming community with a rural vibe,” says Nicole Froehlich, Realtor at Compass Realty Group. “The best part is that we still have access to that city lifestyle across the St. Croix River.” And with the Wisconsin Highway 64 nearby, 45-mile trips into the Twin Cities are accessible within an hour’s drive.

Craftsman-styles and traditional ramblers
The real estate market in Stanton is competitive due to its limited inventory and proximity to downtown New Richmond. “It’s very affordable compared to the surrounding areas,” says Moe, who has been selling in the area for over 17 years. “Especially for first-time homebuyers.” With a median sales price of $400,000, homes here have increased since 2020, making prices more consistent with the average properties in the Minneapolis Metro Area. Single-family homes dominate the area, featuring styles from the mid-1900s. Stanton features a variety of home designs ranging from traditional ranch styles ranging from $300,000 to upwards of $500,000 and Craftsman-style homes ranging from $400,000 to the mid $500,000s. Homes here often feature manicured, lush green lawns and decently-sized paved driveways.

Hunting and birdwatching on the St. Croix Wetlands
Expansive wetlands comprise a quarter of Wisconsin's landscape, and Stanton is no different. It’s home to a series of wetlands comprising the St. Croix Wetland Management District. Stretching over 8700 acres, Stanton is home to more than five Waterfowl Production Areas, which provide hunting or bird-watching opportunities, prevent run-off and serve as a primary habitat for waterfowl. Teams can head to Hatfield Park for practice on the baseball fields while children burn energy on the playground on-site. There’s also a skatepark here, perfect for testing new tricks on the cement ramps. Golfers can visit the public New Richmond Golf Club and practice some swings on the 9-hole course or at the driving range. For bowling, residents can head to Gibby’s Lanes, which features 12 lanes and a family-friendly environment for a few frames nearby.
