Secluded foliage west of the beach

While most coastal communities pride themselves on out-of-towners and flamboyant beach living, the compact neighborhood of Spanish Mission Heights has a far more private, secluded sensibility. “It’s off the beaten path and away from the hustle and bustle of the city,” says Tammy Bowen, who's been a member of the Southeast Volusia Chamber of Commerce since 2017. “It’s a quiet area.” Primarily made up of residential zones, the area is swallowed up in a blanket of trees, shrubs and subtropical foliage, making it ideal for homeowners who appreciate the seclusion of nature.

Central to golf, parks and the beach

Set on the banks of the Indian River 3 miles northeast of Spanish Mission Heights is Riverside Park. This nearly 8-acre recreational area features tree-lined walking paths, fishing piers and an ocean-themed playground for kids. Drive 3 miles north to visit the Hidden Lakes Golf Club: an 18-hole, par 69 course set within the oaks and Spanish moss of the Turnbull Bay estuary. And, of course, the sands of the Atlantic coast are only 5 miles east, making for convenient trips to the beach for surfing, festivals or just sunbathing.

Reasonable prices for coastal living

Manufactured and ranch-style homes are generally the most common in the area, with many painted in bright colors familiar to the Florida coastline. Singlewide manufactured homes start in the mid-$100,000 range, while historic Craftsman and ranch-style homes start in the mid-$200,000s. Homebuyers can find more modern styles and construction in the low-$400,000s. “It’s pretty affordable compared to other areas. Mostly because of the manufactured homes,” Bowen says.

The annual IMAGES festival is a weekend of fine art, food trucks and live entertainment that attracts art lovers nationwide.
