It’s an area at the center of it all, just south of Times Square, providing quick and easy access to other parts of Manhattan. “There’s a ton of history layered into the area,” says David A. Palmieri, a Corcoran broker who sells properties here. “The buildings were not originally built for living, so it’s a different loft-like spatial experience that you really only find in other places like Soho, Tribeca or DUMBO.” The Garment District retains its urban edge, and its location is ideal for immersing oneself in the experiences and traditions of New York City.

Macy’s, MSG and diverse dining choices
Many know that Macy’s flagship store is in the Garment District. True to its name, it is also where many trade businesses, selling fabrics, trimmings and buttons continue to operate. Dining options include casual spots like vegan eatery Beyond Sushi and El Sabroso, a popular Latin American lunch counter tucked away in a freight entrance. Gastropub District Social serves elevated American and cocktails and Mercato offers Italian in a cozy setting. For groceries there is a Whole Foods opposite Bryant Park and a Target on 34th Street. Green space is scarce in the Garment District. City-designated parks function more as public plazas, with seating and vendors, than natural havens. But nearby Bryant Park not only offers a large expanse of grass, it’s also the site of non-stop activity, including the seasonal Winter Village with an ice-skating rink, free summer film screenings, and Broadway in Bryant Park.

A big parade and holiday happenings
The Garment District is always active, but it really comes alive during the holidays. The iconic Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade kicks off the season, and shoppers and tourists flock to the department store to shop and peer at holiday window displays. Bryant Park’s Winter Village features a tree-lighting, ice-skating, a holiday market and food vendors.

A wealth of transit options
The Garment District’s central Manhattan location means transit to anywhere in the city is a breeze. No fewer than 14 subway lines can be accessed along 34th and 42nd Streets, providing local and express service options. The Long Island Rail Road and Amtrak depart from the new Moynihan Train Hall, and a PATH station at 33rd Street offers easy connectivity to New Jersey. While there are no elementary schools in the Garment District, the nearby public school Chelsea Prep enrolls prekindergarten through fifth grade and is highly rated, receiving an A plus from Niche. Major projects on the horizon
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey plans a $10 billion overhaul of its midtown bus terminal, which is projected to be completed in 2032. New York’s Penn Station will also be reimagined and expanded with a multi-billion dollar project still in the planning phase.
Penn Station is a short walk from the Garment District.
