Historical firsts, landmarks and activities aplenty
Hartsdale is a place of firsts and onlys. Founded on the coattails of the American Revolutionary War in 1788, Hartsdale's first town hall is still standing. "The first brick-and-mortar Carvel location was also in Hartsdale," says Realtor Jimmy Oddone of Sigma Real Estate, who sells properties all across Westchester County. If that were not enough, Hartsdale is also home to America's first pet cemetery, the only of its kind on the National Register of Historic Places. Like many Westchester communities, Hartsdale is anchored by a cozy central hamlet for boutique shopping and dining. Surrounding that are additional design hallmarks of Westchester County include serene residential areas largely consisting of commuters who take an hour-long train ride on Metro North into Grand Central Station every day. But with competitive prices for homes in the New York metropolitan area, Hartsdale's uniqueness is further highlighted amidst the other posh NYC suburbs across Westchester County.
Home styles echo the local history
Hartsdale evolved from an agrarian community into a rail suburb after the Civil War, before becoming a community of single-family houses surrounding a central hamlet of apartments by the 1940s. A patchwork of tree groves still covers the winding streets that connect the quieter areas with the busier hamlet. The first development boom left behind homes from the 1920s and 30s, which largely adopted a Colonial Revival or Tudor-style design. A few decades later, another boom established Hartsdale's predominant stock, which includes a variety of vernacular designs, primarily split-levels, second-story overhangs and ranchers. Since then, new builds have trickled into the area, as have modern condos and townhouses. Regardless of their style or age, a single-family home in Hartsdale could cost anywhere between $300,000 and $1.6 million, although prices tend to swing to the extremes of that range depending on a home's upkeep, location and square footage. For the most part, prices on modest sized single-family homes range from $500,000 to $850,000. “The median price is lower than the median of Westchester County, so you’re getting a good deal here," Oddone says. There are even some homes needing repairs that sell for less than $500,000. Meanwhile, co-op apartments help provide an option in town with lower buy-in, usually sold for between $100,000 and $400,000, depending on the number of rooms and the building's amenities.

Platform tennis at the Scarsdale Golf and Country Club
Surrounded by country clubs and greenery, Hartsdale is packed with serenity. The Scarsdale Golf and Country Club is one of several options that offer a private place to mingle over a round of golf or a platform tennis matchup. Hartsdale contains sweeping acres of public spaces too, like Harts Brook Park and Preserve's 2.5 miles of hiking trails. But the green spaces serve more than Hartsdale's humans. "It's a lot easier to have a pet in Westchester than in Manhattan," says Vice President of the Hartsdale Pet Cemetery Ed Martin III. "People come from out of state or different countries just to visit. There's so much history and famous headstones here that curiosity takes over and people have to see it."

Cross-generational recipes from the Candlelight Inn
The hamlet of Hartsdale forms along Central Avenue, where residents find an array of pet stores, barber shops, and international eateries. Offering a particular emphasis on Greek and Japanese cuisine, residents can enjoy bento boxes from Kyo Sushi or heaping portions of souvlaki from Gyro Gyro. Hartsdale's real treasure is the cash-only Candlelight Inn, whose buffalo wings have been a staple since 1955. Central Avenue also lends access to major retailers near the hamlet, such as Trader Joe’s and H Mart to the north, or an Alamo Drafthouse Theater location to the south at Yonkers Gateway Center.

Frequent Metro North trains for city commuters
Jutting off from Hartsdale Avenue leads to a Metro North train station. Riders can expect a train at least every thirty minutes and travel to Grand Central Terminal in under an hour. Taking the scenic routes into Manhattan by car will take longer. But with the Sprain Brook Parkway and the Bronx River Parkway both in sight, drivers have connections to other highways, tollways and bridges.
Celebrating the circles of life at the Hartsdale Pet Cemetery
Small events are common throughout Hartsdale. The Greenburgh Nature Center's Maple Sugaring Party allows attendees to watch the process of turning tree sap into sugar while enjoying tasty treats. When looking to grow the family, the Hartsdale Pet Cemetery offers a full circle of life with pet adoption events. "When you've been here as long as I have, you develop relationships with people who visit their pet's plots," says Martin III. "When you read the epitaphs on our monuments, you really can feel the love people have for their pets."
The Hartsdale Pet Cemetery is the only pet cemetery on the national register of historic places.

Things to consider
There are some 100-year and 500-year flood zones throughout Hartsdale. Most are contained around the hamlet and along major roadways like the Bronx River Parkway or Central Avenue. Some residential areas are impacted by these flood zones and homeowners living within them might be required to purchase flood insurance. Additionally, although Hartsdale is a largely quiet area with plenty of trees to help dampen noise, excessive noise can be a concern for some homeowners, particularly those living close to major roads like the Sprainbrook Parkway.
