Some of Manhattan’s biggest businesses and attractions—as well as its most expensive residences—are in Midtown. It’s a neighborhood full of the hustle and bustle that makes New York famous. “People who live there want the excitement of the city the minute they walk out the door,” says Suzan Kremer, a broker with Douglas Elliman with more than 15 years of experience. Global headquarters, fashionable flagships and institutions like The Plaza, Carnegie Hall, Rockefeller Center and the Museum of Modern Art line Midtown’s streets. Billionaires’ Row, a strip of supertall residential towers overlooking Central Park, attracts buyers with deep pockets, but there are also more down-to-earth housing options and pieds-à-terre are plentiful. The streets are full of commuters during the day, but, after hours, art lovers come out for concerts and performances and to enjoy the area’s many upscale dining and drinking options.

Luxury brands and upscale eateries
Bergdorf Goodman. Tiffany & Co. Saks Fifth Avenue. These are the kind of luxury stores found on Fifth Avenue, alongside international chains such as H&M and Adidas. It’s not an exaggeration to say that people come from all over the world to shop here and enjoy the over-the-top holiday window displays every winter. Restaurants skew toward the glamorous, with options such as The Russian Tea Room or Michael's New York, serving California-inspired cuisine to an A-list crowd. But there are also familiar favorites, like the Carnegie Diner & Cafe, offering classic fare across from Carnegie Hall. Groceries can be found at either Ernest Klein & Co., on Sixth Avenue near West 56th Street, and Morton Williams, on West 57th Street.

From skyscrapers to pieds-à-terre
The most expensive home ever sold in the US was on Midtown’s Billionaires’ Row—a $238 million penthouse sold in 2019 at 220 Central Park South, a 70-story tower with a suite of luxury amenities designed by starchitect Robert A. M. Stern. Other supertalls with white-glove service include Extell’s One57, the 84-story Steinway Tower and the 131-story Central Park Tower, the tallest residential building in the world. A sky-high family home in Midtown could easily cost $20 million or more, but the area also offers more modest prewar and postwar co-ops and less flashy condo developments, with prices for units ranging from around $1 million to $3 million. Midtown attracts “a sophisticated, global community,” Kremer says, many of whom have several homes and often opt for a pied-à-terre.

Anchored by Central and Bryant parks
Central Park provides greenspace for Midtown residents, and Wollman skating rink, the Central Park Zoo and the Hallett Nature Sanctuary are all in the southern part of the park. The park has nearly 900 acres to explore, so residents have plenty of space to roam. Bryant Park anchors Midtown to the south, providing food kiosks, tables and chairs for a quick lunch and seasonal concerts and other events.

Holiday Happenings
The holidays are a busy time in Midtown, when tourists and locals alike clamor to see the windows of the nearby department stores or the ice-skating rink and giant Christmas tree in Rockefeller Center.
