A college town in the best way

Downtown Newark is home to the University of Delaware, one of the oldest universities in the country. The city was once a tiny village between two creeks, but the university turned the area into a hub for education in the 1700s. Today, Downtown Newark contains a mix of residents, including university students and faculty, in addition to families. Surrounding the campus is a bustling and accessible downtown, where locals and college students enjoy restaurants, bars and parks. The college has long stood as a part of local and national history, with alums including founding fathers and modern politicians.

Apartments, student housing and small suburbs

Most of the housing in Downtown Newark is comprised of apartment complexes and student dorms. However, there are also subdivisions in and around the university. "Newark is pretty big," says Debbie Christie, a Newark resident and Realtor with Northrop Realty. ""In the heart of the city, within 2 to 3 miles of the University, there is quite a bit of student housing and rentals, along with several neighborhood communities and local K-12 schools that form the bedrock of the town. You'll also find graduate housing and additional subdivisions and neighborhoods near the stadium and on the outskirts of UDEL." Brick Cape Cods, ranches and houses with colonial influences sit along streets with sidewalks. Many homes have grassy lawns and clusters of trees that shade homes and roadways. Houses range in price from $325,000 to $575,000, depending on upkeep and proximity to the university.

Most restaurants are on Main Street

Downtown Newark's stores and restaurants are mostly found on East Market Street. El Diablo Burritos attracts many students for its quickly made dishes. The Peach Blossom Eatery is more popular with residents and has colorful flower art covering the walls. "Timothy's is a local favorite, and I would also recommend Taverna on Main Street," Christie says. Timothy's of Newark is a sports bar, while Taverna's menu features pasta and pizza. The community-owned organic grocer, Newark Natural Foods, stands on Main Street. The Grove at Newark retail center has an ACME Markets grocery store. Shoppers can thrift at the Newark Shopping Center or watch a movie at Main Street Movies 5.

University of Delaware events, concerts and local venues

The Bob Carpenter Center is a hub for the University of Delaware's basketball and volleyball games. Next door is Delaware Stadium, home of the Delaware Fightin' Blue Hens. "The Newark concert series, off Main Street and at White Clay Creek State Park, are big community draws," Christie says. The city hosts the Spring Concert Series on the lawn at the university's Academy Building. Christie says the Summer Concert Series at the park can attract over 300 locals each Wednesday. Downtown Newark's venues are known to host small-time affairs, such as Comedy Night at Midnight Oil Brewing Company.
