Clinton Hill undergoing revitalization from the inside out
In Clinton Hill, just outside downtown Newark, residents work with their neighbors to continue neighborhood cleanup efforts, allowing the historic homes of Clinton Hill to shine. The Clinton Hill Community Action organization started a host of initiatives and residents keep the momentum going. “Community Action is a nonprofit organization that specializes in the revitalization of Clinton Hill,” says Shakur Gibson, the resident power builder of the group. “We try to enhance residents. We are geared towards making sure our residents feel seen and heard. Our goal is to activate residents leading quality of life improvement projects.” As Clinton Hill begins to revitalize itself, more residents are moving to the area, wanting to escape crowded New York City neighborhoods. “A lot of people decide to move to this neighborhood due to the affordable prices and low taxes,” says Johnny Rojas, a Realtor at Century 21 JR Gold Team Realty for 27 years and leader of the Rojas team. While Clinton is only 3 miles from downtown Newark, homes and lots are larger than in New York City, with a single-family home averaging 3,615 square feet, significantly above the national average.
Commuters use Interstate 78 and Newark Penn Station
Clinton Hill sits 5 miles from the Newark Liberty International Airport, with direct access to Interstate 78, providing easy transportation for its many Manhattan commuters. However, the area's urban atmosphere combined with the interstate can become loud. Those wanting to avoid driving the 15 miles into the city can use Newark Penn Station, 3 miles away. The trains come every 12 minutes, and the commute takes roughly 21 minutes. To explore locations outside of Clinton Hill, New Jersey Transit bus stops line Clinton Avenue and Hawthorne Avenue. The Newark Beth Israel Medical Center is a mile away for medical care.
Multifamily homes with backyards
A mix of old homes built in 1910 and newer houses from the early 2000s line gridded streets branching off Clinton Avenue. Lots have enough room for a small front and back yard shaded by mature trees. Most homes are multifamily units in the Foursquare and contemporary styles, ranging from $330,000 to $575,000 for older properties and $600,000 to $875,000 for newer homes and those built in the early 2000s. “If there’s an opportunity to buy a two-family house, they’ll buy that,” says Rojas. “Live there five years, then sell that house and buy a one-family house.” Single-family homes range from $200,000 to $650,000. The CAP Index crime score is 6 out of 10, above the national average of 4. Community Action continues to support Clinton Hill with programs for affordable housing, education and food justice. In addition, the organization educates residents on resources to mitigate health risks in their homes, such as lead exposure.
Urban farm on Hawthorne Avenue
Mildred Helms Park provides a green space for neighbors, acting as a shared backyard with walking paths and a play structure. Along Hawthorne Avenue, the colorful Tech World Playground sports a red and blue basketball court and a maze-like play structure for climbers. A mile outside the neighborhood, Irvington Park has a large play structure near an open green space for picnics with a water feature. Surrounding the playground are several sports fields for basketball, soccer, baseball and tennis. Fresh produce is available at the Hawthorne Avenue Farm, a 3-acre urban farm cultivated by the Greater Newark Conservancy. The group aims to provide communities with healthy food and fresh produce while promoting green spaces and environmental justice. Recently, the conservancy launched a mobile farm stand using a refrigerated van that will help distribute food to the larger Newark area.
Locally owned restaurants along Clinton Avenue
Most of the restaurants in Clinton are locally owned, such as Kings Family Restaurant & Catering, which serves halal American comfort food. Burkindi Restaurant offers West African and American cuisine in a brightly painted diner atmosphere. Groceries and other essentials are available at Family Dollar and SuperFresh Irvington, which are a mile away. Community Action’s Food Pantry Hub at Zion Hill Baptist Church provides a refrigerated space for local food pantries to store their perishables and provide locals with a more diverse array of affordable produce.
Career and Technical Education program at Malcolm X Shabazz High School
Clinton Hill is served by the Newark Public School District, which receives a C-plus from Niche and is a choice school district, meaning that residents may attend schools other than their designated location. Hawthorne Avenue Elementary School for prekindergarten through eighth grade and Malcolm X Shabazz High School for ninth through 12th grade are both in Clinton Hill and receive C grades. Malcolm X Shabazz High School has a gifted and talented program offering advanced placement and honors courses, as well as a career and technical education program with training in cosmetology, engineering, automotive and aviation.
Clinton Hill Community Action hosts community events
Clinton Hill Community Action organizes several events throughout the year, from specialty occasions such as farmers markets, fashion shows and educational expositions to holiday-themed activities like the Clinton Hill Christmas Tree Lighting and trunk-or-treating. Masjid Fallahee, Zion Hill Baptist Church and the Trinity United Methodist Church hold religious services and holidays.
