Overlooking the Passaic River, Mount Pleasant is an urban residential community close to the heart of Newark. The neighborhood sits above the river on top of Mount Pleasant, where the area also gets its name. “You can even see the Manhattan skyline from some parts of the neighborhood,” says Jessica Davidson, a real estate salesperson with ERA Justin Realty Co., who’s been selling homes around the area since 2016. Newark’s recent revitalization efforts have led to the demolition of many of the original homes in the neighborhood, leaving mostly new apartments and older multi-family rowhouses. The 36-acre Mount Pleasant Cemetery, the first rural cemetery in the Newark area, takes up much of the community’s northeastern section. The cemetery, which has been around since 1844, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1988.

Multi-family homes starting in the $400,000s
While Mount Pleasant has a lot of apartments, there are some older single- and multi-family colonial-style duplexes. Homes are clustered tightly together, with most just having a small backyard. Some houses feature short driveways, but others have to rely on street parking for personal vehicles. With the limited number of homes left in the neighborhood, the market is competitive. “The average time on the market in this area is less than 30 days,” said Davidson. “I just sold a three-bedroom home in Newark and there were multiple offers.” Three- to eight-bedroom single- and multi-family homes typically sell for $400,000 to $700,000. There are also one- to three-bedroom condos that range from $200,000 to $400,000.
Mount Pleasant is a moderate income neighborhood.

Accessing NYC via bus, train and car
Because of its urban streetscape, Mount Pleasant is highly walkable and bikeable. There are several forms of public transit in the area, including bus stops along Broadway and Mount Prospect Avenue. “If there’s an accident that’s tying up the bus route, they can just jump on the train instead,” says Davidson. The Broad Street train station is a mile south and takes residents to New York City's Penn Station in about 40 minutes. Residents can drive the 11 miles into the city on McCarter Highway and use the Holland Tunnel. Newark Liberty International is 5 miles south. University Hospital is 2 miles south.
Roller skating at Branch Brook Park
Just north of the neighborhood, The Waterfront recreation center has indoor and outdoor sports facilities. Less than a mile west, Branch Brook Park is a 360-acre green space with 5 miles of paved trails, a welcome center and a playground. There’s also an indoor roller skating rink offering lessons, a cafe and an arcade. And just south in downtown, The Newark Museum of Art has a collection of over 12,000 American pieces dating from the 1800s to present day.
