Historic architecture and community spirit in Springfield-Belmont
Springfield-Belmont, a small residential neighborhood of Newark, is located in what is known as the Central Ward. "It has a great neighborhood feel," Brendan Da Silva, a real estate agent with the Da Silva Team, said. "People know each other in the area." Springfield-Belmont is home to varied grand architecture, mainly found on Martin Luther King Boulevard. These historic buildings add character to the neighborhood's central pipeline, including the vast art deco structure that houses Arts High School near the large, brown-bricked Cathedral of St. James AME Church and the Krueger-Scott Mansion. This magnificent Victorian-style structure is the most expensive residence ever built in Newark. It's also less than 20 miles from Midtown, making trips in and out of New York City seamless.
Mostly townhomes and apartments, and people like being near University Hospital
Springfield-Belmont's leafy sidewalk streets are home to primarily 21st-century townhomes and apartments. Older multifamily rowhomes dot the neighborhood. Residents also choose this neighborhood because of its large stock of townhomes and condos and its proximity to train stations and downtown Newark. The neighborhood's closeness to University Hospital is another big draw. "Doctors and nurses who work at University Hospital will always buy in Springfield-Belmont," Da Silva said. "Springfield-Belmont is one of the last affordable spots in Newark, a reason why people move here," Da Silva said. Dwellings in the Springfield-Belmont area have a median price of about $300K.
Arts High School and other options for Springfield-Belmont
Arts High School is a neighborhood visual and performing arts magnet school and the country's inaugural public arts high school. First opening its doors in September 1931, the school offers options for students in drama, dance, visual art, television communications and vocal and instrumental music. Renowned actor Michael B. Jordan is a graduate of Arts High School. Other neighborhood secondary schools include American History High, a magnet school, and Central High School. Students can also enroll in private schools nearby, including St. Benedict's Preparatory, a co-ed K-12 Catholic institution and St. James Preparatory, a co-ed middle and high African Methodist Episcopal school.
Nat Turner Park, recreation centers, and the library provide lots to do
Named after the leader of the 19th-century rebellion for enslaved people, Nat Turner Park is Newark's largest city-owned park. The space is a recreational haven for all residents, from its paved walking paths to its football field, track, and playground. On hot summer days, you can swim with your neighbors at the Hayes Park West Recreation Center's outdoor pool. Within Jesse Allen Park, you'll find a state-of-the-art skatepark, basketball courts and a water spray area. Once a struggling natural grass field, city officials turned Hank Aaron Field around and made it a premier local baseball field. Upgraded to a synthetic turf field, it now has a home run plaza, more bleachers, an announcer's booth and more.
Learn how to swim at the John F. Kennedy Recreation Center. Or put your dancing feet to work at the weekly soul line dancing class. At the New Community Recreation Center, residents can seek housing, education, health care, financial stability and childcare assistance. The New Community Corporation offers a wealth of services for neighborhood children. There are summer camps, summer enrichment programs for high schoolers, a young men's leadership program and Saturday Fun Club.
Get a library card and dive into the world of books at the Newark Public Library's Springfield branch next to the New Community Recreation Center. Always check out the library system's calendar for trivia nights, STEM activities and family story times at the Springfield branch.
Chain stores, local dining and culture
When needing to stock the fridge, head to the local ShopRite. The area also has a large Dollar Tree, an Auto Zone and a slew of fast-food chains like Sonic and Popeyes. For local flavor, King Fish Market has you covered for all your fresh seafood needs, while Vonda's Kitchen serves up delicious comfort food like macaroni and cheese and beef short ribs. If you are looking for a day of arts and culture, nearby is The Newark Museum of Art or the New Jersey Performing Arts Center, commonly called NJPAC.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
