Low State Forest and Lake Massasecum provide outdoor recreation without the accompanying tourists that flock to Lake Sunapee. A drive in any direction leads to either a state park, forests, mountains or a denser city with shopping and dining, though Bradford also offers many of these amenities right in town.

Summer days at Lake Massasecum and hiking the Bog Boardwalk
Bradford’s location within 10 miles of Sunapee provides quick access to the town’s popular state park and lake. Lake Sunapee is the largest nearby body of water, bringing in visitors from all over the state for its resort activities and beaches. Mount Sunapee State Park features ski slopes in the winter, as well as many hiking trails overlooking the valley below. In Bradford, though, Lake Massasecum offers similar recreation options, including fishing, relaxing on the sandy shores and boating. The Lake Massasecum Park and Campground has cabins and paddle boats for rent, picnic tables and fire pits. Residents also get access to the private beach at French’s Park, which attracts many anglers looking to catch a largemouth bass or chain pickerel. This park also hosts the New Year’s Day polar plunge and outdoor swim lessons during the summer through the Concord YMCA. When the temperature drops, locals often use the lake for ice fishing and skating. Hikers don’t have to travel far for trails of varying difficulty. The Low State Forest features the Knights Hill Scenic Overlook, and the Bradford Bog Boardwalk offers a flat, 1-mile path through an Atlantic white cedar swamp and fen area.

Everyday needs at Sweet Beet Market and dining at Appleseed
Bradford has no big-box stores, and its only chain restaurant is Dunkin’ Donuts. Fresh produce and groceries can be purchased at Sweet Beet Market + Café, which also serves farm-to-table to-go meals. Residents head to Warner’s Market Basket just about 8 miles away for larger grocery runs, and the closest Walmart is about 23 miles northwest in Claremont. The Lumber Barn Building Supplies off Route 114 provides gardening, home improvement and hardware needs. Passersby may confuse Appleseed Restaurant for a private residence, but it has been a staple in Bradford since 1977. Appleseed serves up classic country fare in a rustic, wooden dining room, complete with New Hampshire license plates hanging on the walls and checkered picnic table covers.

Bradford community centers bring residents together
Bradford has plenty of events throughout the year. “There is a real sense of community here despite it being a rural area,” Barselle says. The Bradford Center Meeting House hosts a summer concert series, during which the volunteer firefighters grill up burgers and hotdogs for fundraising. The Bradford Independence Day Celebration consists of fireworks, a 5K race and a parade for residents to show off their decorated bikes. For Christmas, locals come to the Brown Memorial Library to visit with Santa and enjoy a holiday story time before the annual lighting of the town tree. Residents can also hop aboard the Jingle Bus, to see all of the holiday lights on homes that participated in the decoration contest. Children can participate in the Annual Ice Fishing Derby at Lake Todd or join a youth baseball or softball team. Adults also have an opportunity to get active through Bradford Parks and Recreation’s beginner curling classes.
Driving in Bradford and access to New London Hospital
Bradford’s rural landscape and lack of public transportation make the area car dependent. Route 103, which leads to one of New Hampshire’s major interstates, 89, and Route 114 are the busiest throughfares. Travelers can take either I-89 or Route 114 to reach Manchester-Boston Regional Airport, about 40 miles away. Route 103 runs north into New London, which houses the closest hospital, about 13 miles away.
