Private, country club lifestyle north of Newport Bay
Big Canyon is one of the highest rated — and most expensive — country clubs in Newport Beach. The same adjectives apply to its neighborhood. “It’s an exclusive area alongside a beautiful country club and golf course. It’s really an incredible place to live,” says Rob Montgomery with Arbor Real Estate. He’s lived in Newport Beach for over 30 years and has sold homes for over 20. “The real estate is just gorgeous. You have large lots with views of the golf course or the Fashion Island mall. People may have second homes elsewhere, but Big Canyon is a primary residence for most.” Popular with executives and other high-profile individuals, this neighborhood is known for its luxurious lifestyle, where members often meet each other at the club for a meal. A majority of the area is guard gated, and people drive golf carts around its winding streets. Hopping in the car, they can travel a few miles south to Newport Beach and its luxury restaurants and shops.
Exclusive golf at Big Canyon Country Club
Big Canyon Country Club is central to the lifestyle here. A member-owned institution, it was established in 1971 and requires sponsorship from two current members to join. The clubhouse has a spa, barber shop, Olympic pool and tennis courts, and golfers can visit its restaurant before or after rounds. The course itself has 18 holes with rolling hills and sharp bends. Catering to beginners and accomplished players alike, it hosts more than 70 tournaments throughout the year, including the Men’s, Ladies’ and Couples’ Balboas. Newport Beach Country Club is another invitation-only club just south of the neighborhood. Besides the golf, the neighborhood is about a mile’s walk from Upper Newport Bay or the Back Bay. This marine conservation area has a 10-mile trail around it, and wildlife is a common sight, from bobcats to pelicans.

Mansions with Big Canyon Golf Course views
Big Canyon is known for its mansions. With over 9,000 square feet on the high end, these are some of the priciest and most sought-after properties in Newport Beach. They feature golf course views and pools, and though many have been renovated, they were mostly built in the 1970s. They start at $5 million but can reach $20 million with triple the space. One-story and two-story properties have less room, but they’re between $2.5 million and $4.5 million. Townhomes and condos are in the subdivisions of Big Canyon Villas, Big Canyon McClain and Big Canyon Deane, some of which are outside of the community's gates. Mostly on the neighborhood’s north and south sides, they’re between $1 million and $3 million. Big Canyon has 11 community associations with different rules and fees, but most are under the Big Canyon Master Association.

Across the street from Fashion Island
Fashion Island is one of the biggest draws here. “It’s an unbelievable location in that you can walk to the mall,” Montgomery says. With over 15 million visitors per year, it’s the most popular outdoor mall in Newport Beach and has department stores, high-end restaurants, a Whole Foods Market and a movie theater called The Lot. Mariner’s Mile is a few miles west on the Pacific Coast Highway and is known for its luxury cars and marine stores. Lido Marina Village is a waterfront mall in this area with restaurants like Nobu and Malibu Farms.

Golf carts on Big Canyon Drive, a few miles from the PCH
Big Canyon has sidewalks and bikeable streets. Most people use golf carts around the neighborhood, but they likely use cars to get around Newport Beach. Big Canyon Drive is the main loop here and has both of the community’s gated entrances. Just past these gates, San Joaquin Road connects to other major thoroughfares and eventually leads south to the Pacific Coast Highway. This freeway goes to other coastal cities like Huntington Beach and Long Beach. Alternatively, Fashion Island also serves as Newport Transportation Center, so Orange County Transit Authority operates routes 1, 55, 57 and 79 through the area.
