A rich military history

The exhibits, galleries and archives within The Mariners’ Museum and Library tell a story about Newport News, one that incorporates the rich maritime and military histories that shaped the city’s economy and culture. The museum has a long story to tell; the region is not only home to the first colonial settlement, but also some of the most significant naval battles, fishing and whaling industries, military installations and shipbuilding facilities in America. Newport News Shipbuilding currently employs over 24,000 workers, and local US military facilities include Langley Air Force Base, Camp Perry and Naval Station Norfolk, the world’s largest naval base. Many shipbuilders and military personnel live in South Morrison, carrying on a 400-year-old maritime tradition. “Generally, many buyers are drawn to the area because of the convenient access to the military installations,” says Liz Kilby, supervising broker at the James River Newport News office with Long & Foster Real Estate. “People living on the peninsula can commute to Norfolk if they’re in the navy, and people in the Air Force are close to Langley Air Force Base.”

South Morrison's bustling housing market

The streetscapes throughout South Morrison are more suburban than in communities closer to the surrounding rivers, with mature sweetgum and red maple trees casting long shadows over the wide streets and leafy lawns. Potential home buyers can choose from several traditional architectural types common to southeast Virginia, including ranches, colonials and Dutch Colonials. Most homes include off-street parking and generous outdoor living spaces, and are priced between $250,000 and $350,000. Homes sell quickly in South Morrison, typically spending at most three weeks on the market.

Sand traps, sand dunes and Sandy Bottom Park

The South Morrison community comes together at Ivy Farms Park, a Newport News city park located at the center of the neighborhood. Many of the neighborhood’s homes sound the park, making it a convenient location for farmers markets, open-air concerts and sandlot-style ballgames. A few blocks to the north, Sandy Bottom Nature Park offers a lake, playground, nature center and dog park on 456 acres of protected land. Residents can drive to the sandy beaches at Huntington Park on the James River, or avoid the sand altogether at Hamptons Golf Course, a well-maintained 18-hole public golf course. On rainy days, locals sink into the recliners for a movie at Cinemark City Center.

Fresh fish and farm-to-table produce

Residents enjoy immediate access to the one-stop convenience of Walmart Neighborhood Market, where they can pick up groceries, household items, prescriptions and more without leaving the South Morrison neighborhood. For something equally convenient but locally owned, residents can head to Game’s Farmers Market, a specialty grocery store inside a massive barn on Harpersville Road, where shoppers can find locally grown produce, ethically sourced meat, Amish-style bulk items and hard-to-find seasonal items. Harpoon Larry’s Fish House & Oyster Bar makes their cocktail and horseradish sauces, best enjoyed with the daily haul of oysters, clams, shrimp and mussels pulled from the Chesapeake Bay.
