Jonquil Terrace is a residential section of Niles, one of the many Chicago suburbs defined by larger homes, lower cost of living and higher-rated schools. While it doesn't have its own Metra stop, Niles is known for its affordable homes and suburban pace of life. Jonquil Terrace enjoys easy access to some of Nile's best shopping and recreation opportunities, as well as the Niles Free Bus. "Niles has a lot of community events and activities — which makes it a great place to raise a family," says Carol Harczak, a managing broker with Re/Max All Stars who lived in Niles for more than 20 years. Jonquil Terrace is also one of the only sections of Niles zoned for Park Ridge schools. "This neighborhood draws people who are looking for Park Ridge schools but don't want to pay Park Ridge taxes," Harczak explains.
Parks, pools and popular children's programs
The namesake Jonquil Terrance Park sits at the heart of the neighborhood, offering a playground, lighted tennis courts and two ball fields. This area of town also has a lot to offer in terms of recreation. Locals can walk a few minutes to an Anytime Fitness gym, and the Oasis Waterpark & Fun Center is just across Milwaukee Avenue. Oasis is the village's only outdoor pool, complete with three slides, a splash pad and a concession stand. For most homes, the pool is about a five-minute walk away. "Oasis gets very popular in summertime," Harczak says. "It's one of Niles' best attractions."
A mile away, the Niles Family Fitness Center has an indoor pool and regular fitness classes, including youth programs. Right next to the fitness center, the Niles-Maine District Library has a popular children's section and regular craft nights.

Midcentury homes with some of the lowest property tax in Cook County
Jonquil Park has mainly ranch-style homes built in the 1950s and 1960s. Typical of that time, homes tend to have detached back garages, and floor plans hardly ever exceed 2,000 square feet. Yards are usually less than a quarter acre, and homes sit close to each other. Paved sidewalks line the streets, and lawns are well-maintained. Depending on size and renovations, prices range from $350,000 to $550,000, slightly above average for Niles. There are also some properties that have been renovated to add a second story. These larger properties range from $500,000 up to $700,000. All of Niles enjoys one of the lowest property tax rates in Cook County. "And the village government fights to keep it low," Harczak says.

Parent engagement at Eugene Field Elementary
Unlike most of Niles, Jonquil Terrace is zoned for the Park Ridge School District. Students can attend Eugene Field Elementary School, less than a mile away. The parent community at Field Elementary is very active, helping plan events like the Back-to-School Bash, Parents Night Out and trips to Chicago museums. Field Elementary grads move on to Emerson Middle School, and both schools get an A-minus rating from Niche. Jonquil Terrace is part of the Maine Township High School District, in the zoning boundary for Maine South High School. Maine South gets an A rating from Niche and is known for being the alma mater of Hillary Clinton.

Two grocery stores within walking distance
The Oak Mill shopping area bordering Jonquil Terrace has two grocery stores. Jewel-Osco is a large chain, and across the road, Jerry's Fruit & Garden has been a local favorite since 1972. The family-owned market prioritizes farm-fresh produce and prides itself on having a more diverse selection of goods than big-name stores. "Jerry's has some of the best prices in Niles, but it's always packed!" Harczak says. For lunch, Minelli Italian Meats & Deli is popular for its fresh-made sandwiches. And just a mile away, there's an H-Mart, an Asian grocery store with an attached food court.

The Niles Free Bus connects the community
Milwaukee Avenue is the main road for most retail and restaurants, so Jonquil Terrace residents have quick access to everything Niles offers. The Niles Free Bus runs along Milwaukee Avenue, offering complimentary trips north to the large Golf Mill Shopping Center or south to the Leaning Tower YMCA. "The bus is a big draw for working parents with kids that need to get to after-school activities or seniors who don't drive," Harczak says. "It has stops at most major destinations and even in residential areas."
Chicago commutes and airport noise
The most direct route to travel the 15 miles into Chicago is via Interstate 90. The trip can be 30 minutes, but rush-hour traffic can add upwards of an hour to that commute. The nearest Metra stop to Jonquil Terrace is Park Ridge, just over a mile away. The Park Ridge Metra makes it downtown in 30 minutes. An alternative to the Metra is the Pulse Milwaukee bus line, which runs down Milwaukee Avenue to connect with the Chicago "L" Blue Line.
For longer trips, Chicago O'Hare International Airport is just 6 miles away. However, most of the village of Niles, including Jonquil Terrace, is on the airport's flight path, so there can be some noise from the planes overhead.

The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data.
