Rural Lycoming County Township with mountain and river views
Bordered by the West Branch Susquehanna River to the north and the Appalachian Mountains to the south, Nippenose is the kind of place where passing trains are the only consistent source of noise, and farms make up most of the land. Still, this Lycoming County township has a deeply rooted community of several hundred people, and residents tend to have family bonds and friendships spanning generations. Sherry Pittenger, secretary/treasurer at Nippenose Township Office and resident since 1963, reflects on growing up there: "Everyone looked after each other. If you got in trouble, you got in trouble with the neighbor and their mom, too. And that's still kind of the way it is. Some new people have moved to the area, but it's very community and family-oriented," she says.
Weekends spent on the ball field
Little League baseball, which was founded nearby in Williamsport in 1938, is central to family life in Lycoming County. Antes Fort Village Park, located in the Antes Fort village within the township, has three softball fields and a football field where families gather for weekend tournaments. Little League is also held on the fields in nearby Jersey Shore Township. "People follow the ball teams around. They could be a wife, husband, grandma, grandpa; they come from out of the area," Pittenger says. She commends the community's involvement in establishing and maintaining the Antes Fort fields. "There were many community fathers that helped build the complex we have now."

Historical Days bring in thousands
Antes Fort Historical Days is the township's largest annual event in September. Started in 1993 as a small community gathering, Historical Days has grown over the years into a three-day festival bringing in thousands of people. Activities change each year but have historically included tractor pulls, a corn hole tournament, a reptile show and Revolutionary War reenactments by the Shadows of the Old West Encampment. Competitions include a greased pig chase and a "mutton bustin" contest for kids. "They put dollar bills on the end of lambs tails, and the kids have to chase the lamb to get the dollar bill off," Pittenger says.
Nippenose also comes together for family-oriented holiday events, like Trunk or Treat in the parking lot of Nippenose Bible Fellowship Church and Santa riding in the fire truck during the holidays. "If you've ever watched Virgin River and how that community gets together, it's like that," Pittenger says. "Everybody doing these things has known each other probably their whole life."
Antes Fort village leads to country roads
Antes Fort is a small village within Nippenose and was once a stockade during the Revolutionary War. Antes Fort is relatively flat compared to the rolling hills that open up to views of the mountains on the outskirts of Nippenose. Properties in Antes Fort include Colonial Revivals and traditional homes built in the early 1900s. Shady Acres Lane also has mobile homes in the village valued in the low $100,000s. Homes in the outlying parts of Nippenose primarily include farmhouses on operational farms covering acres of land. Most homes have sold for between $200,000 and $350,000, though properties don't often come up for sale. Properties in the northern part of the neighborhood are in a flood zone due to the river, though these areas are sparsely populated.

Weis Markets and family-owned Lingle's Neighborhood Market are both on Allegheny Street, and The Shore Diner is among the local restaurants in Jersey Shore. The Shore Diner serves all-day breakfast, burgers and sandwiches in its rustic venue adorned with corrugated metal wall panels, Edison bulbs and unfinished wood furnishings.

Commuting from Nippenose and Geisinger Jersey Shore Hospital
Williamsport is about 17 miles east of Nippenose and is accessible via Route 220. Pittenger says many people also commute to Jersey Shore Township, Lock Haven and the federal prison in Allenwood. Residents primarily get around by car in this rural area. Jersey Shore Airport in the township has no commercial flights, but residents can drive about 22 miles east to get to Williamsport Regional Airport. Geisinger Jersey Shore Hospital is also less than 3 miles west of Nippenose. "My husband and I have both had great care there," Pittenger says. "My husband had back surgery there years ago, and the doctor who did the surgery was one of the two on the list to able to operate on the president of the United States." The hospital is also a trauma center with a helipad for airlifting critically injured patients to larger facilities.
