Residential community 5 miles north of downtown
Meadowbrook Forest is a suburban neighborhood in Norfolk, bounded by North Military Highway and Lake Whitehurst. The community started development in the 1960s after Norfolk annexed land from Princess Anne County. The area has an easy commute to work for Norfolk Naval Station, the largest naval base in the world, and nearby coastal recreation at Oceanview's Beaches. The neighborhood also has an active civic league, lakeside homes and convenient eateries and shops. “We feel like our own little city, it’s a great microcosm of what a community should look like,” says Christian Strange, Treasurer of the Lake Whitehurst West Civic League.
Suburb with distinct character
The neighborhood has a distinct character thanks to its variety of home styles and classic municipal decor. “The streets are lined with gas lamps making a walk at night very picturesque,” says Strange. Cottage-style homes, ranches and colonials make up most of the area's inventory. Down Hunter’s Trail, you’ll find larger, contemporary lakeside homes encompassed by woods, creating a sense of seclusion. Homes in the neighborhood typically range from $300,000 to $500,000.

Events hosted by the Lake Whitehurst West Civic League
The Lake Whitehurst West Civic League, the second-largest league in Norfolk, serves several communities, including Meadowbrook Forest. Join the league and learn about their neighborhood events, such as their annual yard sale in May. The league also hosts a summer block party and a holiday social. “Our civic league is sort of an extension of the government, and we are always looking out for each other,” says Strange.
Easy access to Naval Station Norfolk
A few shops and restaurants are within walking distance, but residents will still want a car to access to rest of Norfolk’s amenities. Interstate 64 is nearby and provides an easy commute to Naval Station Norfolk and the rest of Hampton Roads. There are several bus stops with daily service along N Military Highway. Norfolk International Airport, one of the largest in the region, is just 2 miles east.
