Riverfront living in North Meadowbrook
North Meadowbrook offers residents a large recreational area just 7 miles from Norfolk and 20 miles from Virginia Beach. “You have access to city life, but you’re also very close to the beach,” says Kara Louk, Realtor with Canzell Realty, who has been selling homes for six years and has lived in the area for more than a decade. The area is located next to the Lafayette River, which also offers residents waterfront living. “In North Meadowbrook, you’ll find the best of both worlds in a small town with a coastal feel,” says Louk.
From Cape Cods to colonials
This established neighborhood includes a lot of homes built during the 1960s, including condominiums ranging from $130,000 to about $190,000. Cape Cods with small manicured lawns, mature trees and decent-sized driveways can range from $250,000 up to the low $500,000s. Larger colonial homes with at least four bedrooms and woodsy yards can start in the mid-$300,000s and surge past $900,000.
Maury High's specialty center
Kids in the area may attend Sewells Elementary School, which has a C-plus from Niche. Children can move on to Blair Middle, which has a C and a student-to-teacher ratio of 14-to-1. Students may advance to Maury High, which has a B-plus and offers a pre-med, health and engineering specialty program.
Northside Park
Residents enjoy taking their pets to Meadowbrook Dog Park, which offers two areas for small and large animals and a playground for children. Northside Park is used by skaters and those looking to host a picnic. The Highland Park Veterans Kayak Launch is a waterfront location used for kayaking and canoeing.
Grocery shopping and dining on Hampton Boulevard
Residents head to Food Lion for groceries and home supplies. Harris Teeter is a larger supermarket near the neighborhood for grocery shopping. On the weekend, residents host date nights at Razzo, an Italian restaurant located on Hampton Boulevard. Afterward, have a nightcap at the Dockside Bar and Grill.
Hermitage Museum and Gardens
The Hermitage Museum and Gardens is a popular destination to take in waterfront views and interesting exhibits. Art enthusiasts can also visit the Chrysler Museum of Art for vibrant pieces. The Waterside District is 7 miles away, where people take in colorful murals while walking into different shops, restaurants and bars. History lovers can visit the USS Wisconsin battleship, which is in the district. Louk says she looks forward to the Neptune Festival every year, which is held in Norfolk and offers food, music and wine tasting.
Hampton Roads Transit
The Hampton Roads Transit bus system offers multiple stops throughout the neighborhood and to Norfolk. The Norfolk International Airport is 6 miles from the area.

The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
