Historic Norfolk suburb undergoing revitalization
Olde Huntersville is a historic neighborhood in Norfolk that has undergone revitalization in recent years. It's one of the city’s oldest neighborhoods and one of the few areas at the time that allowed Black families to own homes. During segregation, it was a self-sustained, economically diverse community of business owners, educators and politicians. In the 1960s, many of the neighborhood’s prominent residents left for the suburbs, leading to a decline in the community. In 1980, the Olde Huntersville Development Corporation was established to revitalize the area. The organization developed homeownership opportunities for first-time buyers, built gardens and parks and established a Tidewater Community College satellite campus. Today, some of the older homes are being renovated and new homes are being built. “It took a while to bounce back; however, now, it’s a thriving community with a lot of diversity,” says Ted Wheaton, a Realtor with RE/MAX Allegiance, who’s been selling homes in the Norfolk area for nearly 15 years.

Classic American four-square-style homes and new craftsmans
Originally, Olde Huntersville was divided into two distinct neighborhoods: Barboursville and Huntersville. Over time, these neighborhoods merged to create the present-day community. The area’s appeal lies in its 19th-century homes, which have withstood the test of time and are quite affordable compared to the rest of the surrounding area. “The city of Norfolk has created blueprint plans so that the exteriors of new construction houses match the style of the older homes in the neighborhood,” says Wheaton. Classic American four-square, remolded traditional-style and brand-new craftsman homes populate the tree-lined streets. Some homes feature driveways, while others boast attached garages. Older home styles with up to three bedrooms typically sell for $150,000 to $250,000, while newly constructed homes sell for $250,000 to $350,000.
While Olde Huntersville has a historic feel, new construction homes are also available.
Smaller cottages are available near Olde Huntersville.

Huntersville Community Center, Attucks Theatre
The Huntersville Community Center, located on Goff Street, offers an indoor pool, sports courts and a game room. Huntersville Park is right next to the center with a large, grassy sports field, a small playground, and tennis courts. There’s also Pollard Street Playground with a baseball diamond, basketball courts and a playscape. Attucks Theatre is a historic venue built in 1919 that has hosted legendary entertainers like Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington. The theatre was restored in 2004 and still holds jazz concerts and comedy shows to this day. Just a mile north is the Virginia Zoo with over 700 animals throughout the 53-acre park.
Huntersville Park has a football field, playground, and tennis courts.
Huntersville Community Center has indoor basketball courts for residents.

Sweet Jam Cafe, Turner’s Market
On the corner of Washington Avenue and Church Street, there’s Peoples Pharmacy and Sweet Jam Café, a local spot serving classic southern staples. Turner’s Market is a family-owned and operated neighborhood store on Dungee Street. And for larger shopping trips, there’s a Walmart and Harris Teeter less than 3 miles away. For more shopping and entertainment options, downtown Norfolk is just 2 miles south.

International Baccalaureate program at Granby High
Kids may start at Jacox Elementary, which gets a C-minus from Niche, before going to Blair Middle with a C. Students may then attend Granby High, which earns a B-minus and is the only school in Norfolk that offers an International Baccalaureate program. The Norfolk Public Library: Blyden Branch is just south of the neighborhood on Princess Anne Road.
Blair Middle School serves children from many surrounding neighborhoods.
Granby High School is located in Norfolk and has over 1,800 students.

Close to I-264
While the neighborhood is compact, and some shopping and recreation are walkable, the area is still mostly car-dependent. Interstate 264 is the closest major highway, offering easy access to Portsmouth and Virginia Beach. Bus service in the area is limited, but there are stops along Church Street and Tidewater Drive. Norfolk International Airport, one of the largest in the region, is 5 miles north.
