A neighborhood for military personnel and civilians alike
Less than 3 miles west of the Hampton Roads Beltway lies Sherwood Forest, an established Norfolk, Virginia, neighborhood with leafy, sidewalk-lined streets, charming vintage homes and a convenient location that appeals to military personnel and civilians alike. “We’re a military town,” says Wendy Plemmons, a Norfolk resident and associate broker with Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices RW Towne Realty, who has sold property in Hampton Roads for two decades. “And a lot of people live in Norfolk neighborhoods like Sherwood Forest because they’re so close to the bases and commissary. I had some military clients who transferred here from Hawaii, and they only wanted to live in that area of Norfolk so they wouldn’t have to fight the Hampton Roads traffic.” According to Plemmons, many residents remain in the area even after they leave or retire from the military, giving Sherwood Forest and neighborhoods like it an established feel. “They find that there are good job opportunities here. They can often do a civilian counterpart to their former military job, so they stay.”

New homes and renovations
Sherwood Forest features an eclectic mix of homes from different eras. Alongside charming mid-20th-century bungalows, Cape Cods and ranch-style homes sit modern new builds with traditional features, like gabled roofs, and modern conveniences, including two-car garages. “More and more of the older homes are being updated in Sherwood Forest and Norfolk as a whole,” Plemmons says. “Also, some of the older homes that are beyond repair are being torn down, and people are building new homes in their place. Over the past five years, seven new construction homes have been built in Sherwood Forest alone.” Neighborhood home sizes range from 700 to 2,800 square feet, and list prices fall between $210,000 and $430,000.
