Quiet, rural living in North Berwick

Once a part of greater Berwick, Maine, North Berwick is a bucolic agricultural town about 30 minutes from Maine’s coast. The area is attractive for its landscapes and rural lifestyle. The town was incorporated in March of 1831 and used to be known for the mills along the Great Works River. “You have a lot of wide-open green area,” says Ken Powers, a broker with the North Berwick-based Portico Realty. “You feel like you’re living out in the woods, but you can still get to the beach within 20 to 25 minutes.”

Farm animals graze next to historic architecture in North Berwick

Historical colonial, Cape Cod, and farmhouse-style homes are abundant in North Berwick. Lots are large, and thick tree cover provides privacy and isolation between each property. Many of the houses are zoned as farms, and residents raise goats, chickens and horses on their properties. The winding mountain roads can be treacherous for pedestrians, and residents rely on cars to get around the town. There is some new development among the historic homes, but most of the homes were built in the mid-1900s or earlier. A three-bedroom home in North Berwick will sell for around $350,000.
