South of Taunton, rigid city streets begin to ebb and flow into the countryside of Berkley, a semi-rural town where homeowners can spread out and enjoy that extra bit of acreage. Bounded to the west by the winding Taunton River, this small community is rich in natural beauty. “Berkley offers homeowners a quiet, country life. A lot of people come here to retire, and the area is protected by Right-to-Farm laws,” says Lori Medeiros, a lifelong Massachusetts resident and Realtor with Re/Max Vantage. “They love to have their chickens, a couple of pigs, goats or even llamas. Some have their horse farms,” Medeiros explains.

Wooded homes with spacious yards
There is one thing that all Berkley homes share: ample acreage. Constructed from the 19th through 21st centuries, most houses here sit on over an acre of land. Those looking for seclusion can settle on one of Berkley’s narrower country roads featuring Cape Cod and ranch-style homes. There are no sidewalks here; leafy canopies and tall trees partially conceal houses. Those who prefer a slightly more suburban streetscape can choose from split-level, colonial and upscale New Traditional builds on large, cleared lots. “There's been some newer construction because there is still a lot of available land,” Medeiros says, but Berkley has preserved its bucolic charm. She describes these recent builds as “more like mini subdivisions, just a few houses here and a few houses there. They don’t want condos or huge units of 40 or 50 houses.” Inventory remains low in the area. Single-family home prices range from $400,000 to $800,000, while plots of undeveloped land start at $200,000.

Schools with a focus on agriculture and trade industries
For preschool through Grade 4, children can attend Berkley Community School, earning a B-minus from Niche. Students can move on to B-minus-rated Berkley Middle for Grades 5 through 8. Teens can finish their degrees at Somerset Berkley Regional High. Earning a B rating, the school is ranked the tenth-best public high school in Bristol County, scoring high for its teachers and clubs. “My oldest went there for her first year. We moved after, and she really misses it,” Medeiros says. Alternatively, students can apply to two nearby vocational schools: Bristol County Agricultural High School, with animal science, floriculture, landscape design and environmental conservation programs or Bristol-Plymouth Regional Technical School, offering 19 technical programs in trades such as carpentry, automotive, culinary arts and graphic design. With curving country roads and no sidewalks, residents here drive daily. Taunton is a short 4-mile drive up Berkley Street. For commutes to Boston, 35 miles away, drivers can take State Route 24 and Interstate 93. Buyers should note that heavy traffic closer to the capital city can cause travel time to exceed an hour. Cape Cod is about a 58-mile drive using Interstate 495; for out-of-state travel, T. F. Green International Airport is about a 30-mile drive. Shopping for everyday essentials takes place at Taunton Depot, which has familiar brands like Target, Home Depot, and Petco. Trucchi’s Supermarket is just up the street.
