North Merrick, 36 miles from New York City, appears to be a standard suburban hamlet, but its vibrant community spirit is what draws residents in and makes them stay. “It’s community-oriented. I’ve lived here 35 years, I love it,” says Margaret Biegelman, an associate broker with Douglas Elliman Real Estate. “I have moved three times in the same town, that’s how much I love it.” The Merrick Chamber of Commerce hosts festivals and events throughout the year where neighbors from Merrick and North Merrick gather to socialize. Two of the biggest are the annual spring and fall festivals. “Thousands and thousands of people show up,” Biegelman says. “It’s a big event. There are plenty of rides, plenty of food trucks, plenty of vendors.” Beyond its community, North Merrick is defined by its relationship to the restaurants and shops in the bustling downtown of Merrick. Its suburban nature gives residents breathing room from downtown Merrick while remaining only a mile away.

Commuters have access to parkways and Merrick train station
While there is no overarching industry in the area, many residents have a hybrid work schedule and commute to New York City using the Meadowbrook State Parkway or the Southern State Parkway, which connect to Interstate 495. Those not wanting to drive into New York City often head into Merrick to catch the train to New York City, which takes about 45 minutes along the Long Island Rail Road. The Southern State Parkway also leads to John F. Kennedy Airport, 14 miles away. North Merrick is 3 miles from the Nassau University Medical Center.
High-demand homes in simple styles
With high demand for homes in the community and a very low inventory, the market is brisk. “Homes that come out are gone over the weekend with multiple offers and going way over asking,” Biegelman says. “There’s plenty of competition.” As a result, being prepared for this competition can make all the difference to home buyers. “It’s pretty established,” says Jimmy Amram, a Realtor with Douglas Elliman who has been selling in Long Island for four years. “New construction here and there, nothing major.” Most residences are single-family homes, though some townhouses, condos, co-ops and multifamily builds are available. Styles such as Cape Cod, split-level, new traditional, and minimal traditional are standard here and have a median price of $760,000, above the national median of $406,100 reported by the National Association of Realtors. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, North Merrick has a population of 12,192 as of 2022. The CAP Index crime score is a 1 out of 10, lower than the national average of 4.

Highly rated schools make North Merrick a desirable area
North Merrick’s schools are another major draw to the area. “North Merrick has an award-winning school district,” says Amram. The North Merrick Union Free School District, the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District and the North Bellmore School District serve the area. Children attend school through the North Merrick Union Free School District, which receives an A-minus from Niche, or the North Bellmore School District, which receives a B-plus, for kindergarten through sixth grade. Then, they attend their seventh through 12th-grade years in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District, which receives an A-plus.

Shopping and dining in Merrick
North Merrick is more residential than Merrick, but there are a few restaurants along Merrick Avenue, which has mainly chain restaurants and local businesses, including Pat’s Farms, a produce market and garden center. Residents can follow Merrick Avenue for 2 miles for more variety, eventually reaching the hamlet of Merrick. “There’s something for everyone — Italian, Greek, sushi, Mexican, coffee and ice cream shops,” Biegelman says. The main shopping area is clustered near the Merrick train station, sporting eateries and stores such as Stop & Shop, Outback Steakhouse and more local businesses like Paddy Power Pub.
Residents attend religious services at the Roman Catholic Church of the Sacred Heart North Merrick, The United Methodist Church of Merrick and others in and around the area.

Beaches in the summer, libraries in the winter
“It’s typical New York weather,” Amram says about North Merrick, which means the area sees all four seasons but experiences a cold winters with snow and hot summers. Residents head to Jones Beach, 10 miles away, in summer. Fraser Avenue Park has a playground and an open field for outdoor recreation closer to home, providing space to play sports and picnic. When snow starts to fall, the North Merrick Public Library hosts programs year-round, including adult exercise courses.
