The North Oaks neighborhood is full of beautiful scenery and landscapes.
Luxury living in the Minnesota woodlands
To describe North Oaks, Minnesota, as “pastoral” would be an understatement. Ten miles north of St. Paul in Ramsey County, this roughly 8-square-mile exurb spent decades as untouched farmland after James Jerome Hill bought it in the 1880s. It has since developed into a private city of over 5,000 people, with luxury homes and an exclusive golf club. Yet, it retains a strong, agrarian feel all these years later. “North Oaks is kind of for people who want to live out in the woods of Minnesota but need to be within 20, 30 minutes of the airport,” says decades-long resident and real estate agent Marc Owens-Kurtz with Sotheby’s International Realty. “It’s a private community, but it’s a very laid-back community,” says Owens-Kurtz, who has also served on the North Oaks City Council.
From farmland roots to grand estates
North Oaks is unique in that its lush, forested acreage is entirely resident-owned, from the homes and roads to the 70-plus miles of trails surrounding Pleasant Lake at the heart of the neighborhood. Because of this, all homeowners are members of The North Oaks Home Owners' Association which works to keep the surrounding natural environment untouched. Houses date back to the 1950s, when the Hill family decided to turn their farm into a new residential community. Older homes include a handful of unique ramblers, some with distinct midcentury modern touches, plus a few split-level and Tudor designs. Stately mansions began sprouting up in recent decades — some nearing 10,000 square feet — while the luxury Hill Farm Condominiums boasts North Oaks’ newest constructions, priced from the high $700,000s to over $2 million. Smaller existing homes start in the mid-$300,000s, with price tags exceeding $3 million for the city’s grandest properties.
