Countryside living east of Sarasota
Myakka City is about 25 miles outside Sarasota--far enough away that local resident and Realtor Shelly Dakin of Dakin Drake Real Estate says she can see the stars at night. “It’s a rural, agricultural city, with a hometown community where everyone knows each other and supports each other,” says Dakin, who has lived in Myakka City her whole life. She shares the story of a recent fundraiser hosted by the locally owned Silver Star East Restaurant to help pay the medical bills of a Myakka resident. Over 400 people turned up, and more than $20,000 was raised. “We’re changing, we have more people coming in,” Dakin says. “But I don’t think that people are ever going to stop caring for their neighbors.” Along with farms and homes sitting on multiacre lots, Myakka City has seen some newer development like The Estates at TerraNova, a luxury residential equestrian community. The CAP Index Crime Score is a very low 1 out of 10.

Homes sit on multiacre lots
As Myakka City is a rural community, “most properties here are farms on at least 5 acres of land,” says retired Realtor and lifelong Myakka resident Barbara Anson. Closer to the center of Myakka, the houses sit nearer to one another on smaller lots. Ranch-style homes and bungalows mix with New Traditionals, and while many homes were built in the 1990s and 2000s, some date back to the 1960s. Prices for smaller houses range from $450,000 to $900,000, while larger estates can go for $900,000 to over $1.5 million. Parcels of land typically range from 5 to 10 acres, and acreage price can vary widely, from around $12,000 to well over $100,000 per acre.
There are also new developments popping up in Mykka City. The Soleta Golf community, which is scheduled to break ground in late 2024, will have 93 custom-built estates centered around an 18-hole golf course designed by Nick Price. Other amenities will include a high-end golf practice and performance facility. Another is The Estates at TerraNova, a gated community designed around the TerraNova Equestrian Center, which hosts competitions throughout the year. Planned are 182 custom-built estates that will be set on at least 5 acres. Prices for both communities are yet to be set. One model home in TerraNova Estates sits on about 15 acres with a pool and a stable and is listed at $9.95 million.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency states that Myakka City has a very high risk of hurricanes and a relatively moderate risk of flooding. Flood insurance is recommended for everyone and is required for anyone with a federally backed mortgage.

Farm-fresh dairy goods at Dakin Dairy Farm
In Myakka City, much of which is made up of farmland, food is never far from its source. Dakin Dairy Farm, owned by Shelly Dakin and her family, is one of the area's biggest farms and a popular stop for families, thanks to its farm tours. The on-site market sells fresh dairy products, while decadent milkshakes and ice cream are on offer at Dakin Moofè. Its cafe, Pete’s Place, uses many farm-fresh ingredients, like the cheese on its pulled pork sandwich. Popular local restaurants include Myakka City Tavern & Grill for burgers and wings-- “it's where everyone goes,” Dakin says--and the family-owned Silver Star East Restaurant. While there is a Dollar General and a limited selection of goods at the Myakka City Grocery, which is also a gas station, many residents travel to Sarasota to shop. Aldi is about 16 miles away; Target, Home Depot and Walmart are within 25 miles.
