Shaped like a jewel, you might say that Charles in North Providence is a diamond that came out of the rough. Route 146 runs along the west end, while Interstate 95 runs along the east, making this a highly connected neighborhood. Charles always aimed for being this connected, but it took a lot of trial and error. Industrial businesses arrived in the late 19th-century, drawing residents and growth to the area. Streetcar service was needed to facilitate the influx of residents, and, by the 1930s, this neighborhood began to shine. Today, Charles is a bustling suburb with a strong commercial and business streak still running through it.

You’ll see a lot of homes across the entire spectrum of the $400,000s. As prices crest into the upper $400,000s, date of construction isn't the only contributing factor. Sometimes larger square footage is a factor when it comes to higher price points – homes in Charles can reach up to seven bedrooms. But it's true that a lot of construction here is relatively recent. For example, you can find a bungalow-style house from 2023, spreading across 1,800 square feet, for $440,000. These types of homes will have an attached garage and open floor plan that appeals to modern sensibilities. In this same neighborhood you’ll encounter Neo-Colonial homes from the mid-2000s, priced at $500,000. These will be distinguished by features like: a fenced yard, a finished basement with wet bar and a sprawling floor plan that can reach up to 2,500 square feet.

True to its penchant for persistence, Charles is getting a new K-5 elementary school in the fall of 2023. The former Windmill Street Elementary School is undergoing a $30.5 million renovation, and will be renamed the Narducci Learning Center. Councilman Nicholas Narducci says, “This beautiful building is a symbol of the resiliency and spirit of the people here.” Esek Hopkins Middle School enrolls 500 students in grades 6-8, and has a 13 to 1 student-teacher ratio. The stately red brick building is integrated with a residential street, giving it the feel of a true neighborhood institution. E-Cubed Academy is the area’s public high school, with nearly 350 students enrolled. Niche awarded the school a B- in the teachers category, and an A- in the diversity category.

Both the Narducci Learning Center and Esek Hopkins Middle are situated on the namesake Charles Street, which serves as a kind of classic Main Street for the neighborhood. Here you’ll find various food markets, plus big box stores like Wal-Mart and Home Depot. This is also where you’ll find a range of restaurants, a reminder of the neighborhood’s melting pot heritage. Borrelli’s Bakery is one of those time-honored eateries. Founded in 1948, you’ll still find them serving up eclairs, cream horns and pepperoni bread.

Wanskuck Park is a popular green retreat. Totaling 25 acres, you have plenty of space to roam, whether that’s in an open grassy field or through the wooded trails. There are remnants of history to enjoy, too, such as the stone wall skirting the park and an English country-style church.

When you’re seeking out local amenities like this massive park, or enjoying a moment in your timeless home, you get the sense that Charles is a neighborhood that’s determined to shine on.
