Welcome to equestrian country: even though North Salem is only 55 miles from Manhattan, you quickly realize this is a staunchly rural community. Former cow pastures, marked by old stone walls, are now populated by barns and horses. When it comes to running errands, like shopping for groceries, you’re going to need a car. The presence of Interstate 84 makes it a breeze to reach a Stop & Shop supermarket. Commuters also have access to a pair of Metro-North Railroad stations.

“The advantage of living out in this area, though, is that you’ll get more land with your home,” says Susan Hawkins, a Realtor with Sotheby’s.

While modern styles can be found here, you’ll also see a lot of 18th and 19th century homes in North Salem. For example, expect to encounter plenty of Colonial homes, including contemporary interpretations from the early 2000s that have all the hallmark features of that genre – from a covered front porch to the cool color palette of creams and blues. On the other hand, those vintage styles truly stand out, such as Greek Revival homes from the mid-19th century. Properties typically come with multiple acres of land, and prices are generally in the million-dollar range.

Around 450 students attend Pequenakonck Elementary, where there’s a student-teacher ratio of 9 to 1. Niche awarded the school an A in the teachers category and a B-plus overall. After grade 5, students attend the blended North Salem Middle/High School, which is comprised of one building. Nearly 600 students attend, but there’s still an 8 to 1 student-teacher ratio. Niche gives the school high marks in a wide range of categories – including an A in the teachers category and an A-minus overall.

Near the schools is one of North Salem’s prime attractions: the Hammond Museum and Japanese Stroll Garden. You can visit to check out the exhibitions on Japanese art, or simply walk around the 7-acre garden. Apple picking at Outhouse Orchards always promises a fun get-together. And if you don’t want to hop on the interstate for some food, swing by Harvest Moon Farm and Orchard: the country store has dairy, honey, meats, fruits and veggies. The kitchen sells hot sandwiches and a local favorite – apple cider donuts. Seasonal events are held there throughout the year, from the Easter Egg Hunt in the spring to the Festival of Lights in the winter.

Dining experiences can be exciting here, considering that some chefs from New York City have set up shop in North Salem. One Twenty One, for example, offers a globally-inspired menu while sourcing its ingredients from the Hudson Valley. You might see items like a pizza topped with local mushrooms or grilled lamb chops served with fried grits. Purdy’s Farmer & The Fish is another popular hangout: sit inside an 18th-century farmhouse while enjoying a seafood-forward menu. There’s a tuna burger with wasabi aioli and more than half a dozen raw oyster varieties to choose from.

North Salem may be known for its rural character of rolling hills and farmland, but there’s a cohesive community that keeps it alive.
