With extravagant homes and multimillion-dollar estates, Northville has become known as one of the wealthiest suburbs of metro Detroit. The city’s Historic District — made up of nine streets filled with historic homes — tells the stories of its Victorian-era homes that add to the visual aesthetic and walkability of the community. Holiday parades and cultural festivals fill the streets with fun as neighbors enjoy each other’s company while having a good time. As new estates find their way to the notable Northville, residents welcome new neighbors with open arms.
Art, acoustics and festival fun
Thanks to the city’s Social District, Northville residents enjoy fun year-round at entertaining festivals and events. Acoustic concerts add a certain ambiance to the goings-on, with acts like Phoebe Holmes, Ken Mobley and The Ones and Twos taking center stage. The series runs every second and fourth Saturday from Memorial Day through August and every Friday and Saturday in September. Sponsored by the Northville Art House, the Arts and Acts Festival has been going strong since the late 1980s, showcasing select artwork and creations by creatives competing for top awards.
One of the most highly anticipated festivals in the city, the Victorian Festival, is held every September. Celebrating the city’s history as a Victorian-era village, residents dress in period clothing and enjoy live performances by the Northville Chorale, vintage baseball games at Ford Field and a huge Victorian-themed kickoff parade. Vendor booths and arts and crafts stations keep the entire family involved as Northvillians celebrate their town heritage.
Outdoor fun for everyone
Northville Parks and Recreation is always hard at work improving facilities and developing engaging programming to keep residents active and involved outdoors, from fun-filled daddy-daughter dances to its annual Halloween Spooktacular. Nature buffs can get their kicks at Coldwater Springs and Thayer’s Corner Nature Areas, and furry friends can stretch their legs at the Cady Street and Novi Dog Parks. Formerly a nationally registered fish hatchery, the aptly named Fish Hatchery Park offers baseball fields, tennis courts, a pond and access to Johnson Creek.
The Northville Community Center houses the Department of Senior Services. Programming addresses the social isolation of older adults, providing leisure activities and social outings, along with regular fitness classes and group sports for older adults. The community center also has a recreation center for resident use.
Downtown development thrives
Northville’s food and retail scene is fueled by the success of locally owned businesses, and its active downtown is where over 150 can be found. “It’s a beautiful little town with gorgeous neighborhoods and a very vibrant and historic downtown,” says Jo-Allison Floyd, a resident of nearly four decades. “There are a lot of restaurants and cute shops, and we have excellent schools and good services.” The specialty eateries downtown have everything from hot tea and coffee to cold ice cream, and the restaurants and cafés cover cuisine from Italian to Japanese to the Michigan staple Coney hot dog. Food stands and dining pods are a favorite local experience.
Quaint boutiques and shops also line the streets of Downtown Northville, providing residents with plenty of one-of-a-kind shopping options. Thanks to the Northville Downtown Development Authority, local businesses thrive with the community's support. Tiffany Art Glass has been custom stained glass in the area since 1977, and The Boutique at Studio 170 sells unique apparel and accessories to round out any wardrobe. Studio 170 also houses Northville’s premier salon and spa that caters to the mind, body and soul.
“A World of Possibilities…”
Living up to its motto of “Tradition of Excellence, A World of Possibilities,” the Northville Public Schools District is ranked in the top three best school districts in Michigan with an A-plus grade on Niche. As the only high school that serves the city’s students, Northville High School offers a wide array of academics and innovative extracurriculars not always found at the average high school. Career and Technical Education is offered in partnership with the William D. Ford Technical Center and the Livonia Career Technical Center. The Early Middle College Program allows students to earn an associate degree, professional certification, a registered apprenticeship, a Michigan Early Middle College Association technical certificate or 60 transferrable college credits in addition to their high school diploma. The school also has an athletic program that offers boys' and girls' hockey, alpine skiing, figure skating and gymnastics.
The Cooke School houses the special education programming for 12 school districts throughout Wayne County. With an emphasis on the Essential Elements of the Common Core State Standards, Cooke heavily focuses on Community-Based Instruction. With CBI, students learn by doing, experiencing and engaging in academic and life skills in the actual settings where foundational cognitive skills are fostered in each student. CBI locations include restaurants, retail stores and entertainment sites (bowling alleys, movie theaters, etc.). Cooke’s Individualized Vocational Training and Work Study programs provide training and paid employment opportunities to prepare students for the workforce. All the district’s 11 schools are graded an A or higher or Niche.
Surrounded by interstates
Northville is surrounded by Interstates 96, 696 and 275, making for an easy commute in and around the Metro Detroit area. Just under 30 miles away, the big city is easily accessible to Northville residents via I-96. Detroit Metropolitan Airport is the closest major airport to the area, just under 24 miles away and easily accessible with a quick trip down I-275 South. As part of its Downtown Pedestrian Plan, which kicked off in 2022, the city now boasts increased walkability and ample bike routes so that residents can enjoy a day out without the worry of vehicles.
Top-notch Michigan real estate

Compared to a median sold price of $495,000, Northville has a list-to-sold ratio of 98.3%. The average days on the market have slightly increased from 37 in November 2023 to 48 in January 2024 and have steadily risen since March 2023 (when it was 14).
