A small town feeling east of Toledo

An established suburb east of Toledo, Northwood is removed from the noise of Toledo, giving the area a family-focused environment. With around 5,000 residents in the area, the atmosphere is homey, and ranch-style and split-level homes are easy to find for around $200,000. Cozy dive bars like Paddy Joe’s and Penny Jo’s bowling alley give the neighborhood fun spots to gather with family and friends. Lake School District is rated well on Niche, and class sizes are small. Hollywood Casino sits just outside town on the Maumee River, while nature areas like Brentwood Park and Cedar Creek preserve offer great outdoor space with activities like fishing, baseball diamonds, and playgrounds. Locals can shop at Meijer or grab coffee at Biggby, and a 4-mile drive takes them into downtown Toledo.

Midcentury homes with yards space for families

Northwood’s residential areas are laid out in small blocks of gridline streets. “It’s a lot of old development, mostly industrial and residential areas,” says Northwood resident and Wood County Parks communication specialist Jamie Sands. Rows of houses line the area with small green lawns backing right up to the road. Ranch-style brick homes built in the 1920s add to the old-town feel, and single-family homes built in the 1970s are the most common options for homebuyers. Split-levels with garages and just enough yard space for kids to play sell for under $250,000, with most other homes priced around $150,000.

Shopping along Woodville Road

Locals can buy their groceries at the local Meijer or pick up coffee at the popular regional coffee shop Biggby down the road. Woodville Road, which runs through the center of the neighborhood all the way down to Toledo, is the hub of shops and restaurants. Popular chain restaurants like Mcdonald's sit alongside local bars like Paddy Joe’s, which features a beloved poutine and a music bar atmosphere with its band poster décor. Families can host parties down at Penny’s Eastern Freeway Lanes, a bowling alley with a classic feel.

Natural scenery at Cedar Creek Preserve

Just outside of old industrial districts and residential areas is Cedar Creek Preserve, a nature preserve with restored wildlife habitats and old growth trees. “It’s like a green oasis and has become a community meeting hub,” says Jamie Sands. Locals can leave the old factory buildings and house-lined neighborhood streets to walk 2 miles of scenic trails or explore the native plant garden maintained by their neighbors. In fall and spring, visitors may see swarms of monarch butterflies fly through this official monarch way station. Families can enjoy the two playgrounds, or head to the other side of Northwood to Brentwood Park where folks can play baseball on the diamonds or enjoy seasonal events like the Fishing Derby or the music and food-filled Fall Festival.
