A community-driven neighborhood at heart

Making up the southern portion of the town of Norwood, South Norwood is a warm, friendly neighborhood with a deep sense of community fostered by frequent gatherings and celebrations. “They have a lot of activities throughout the year,” says Tony Camarra, a Realtor with nearly 40 years of experience who's also the president of Camber Real Estate, which has an office in the neighborhood. When there aren’t official community events, the waterfront of Willett Pond provides beautiful views and plenty of entertainment. South Norwood also has more practical benefits for its residents, from what Camarra calls “very reasonable” property taxes to an equally sensible commute to Boston. The town also has a reputable public school system, and plenty of businesses and shops are alongside the U.S. Route 1 artery.

A diversity of home prices

Grassy lawns and narrow sidewalks frame the eclectic New England homes in South Norwood. Single-family residences were mostly built from the late 19th to the mid-20th centuries, ranging from Cape Cods and ranch styles to split-levels. Housing prices usually fall between $500,000 and $850,000, while some newer Colonial Revival estate homes can fetch over $1.5 million. Two and three-family houses also dot the community, including Queen Anne-style triple-deckers with rounded facades and colonial-inspired multi-family properties. These can go from $800,000 to $1.3 million. While multi-unit dwellings, smaller cottages and bungalows can have less yard space, the lot size for single-family properties is usually about a quarter to a third acre of land. Condos can be around the $300,000s, and townhouses are usually between $600,000 and $900,000. “You have a good diversity of home prices,” Camarra says, adding that inventory is low. “If priced right, homes move pretty quickly.” On average, a single-family home stays on the market for just 13 days.

Norwood Day and other festivities

Frequent community events are part of life in South Norwood, from Veteran’s and Memorial Day parades to outdoor summer concerts and indoor music events in wintertime. Norwood Day kicks off the fall season with races and games, carnival rides for kids, live performances and pumpkin painting. Holiday Extravaganza features the annual tree lighting ceremony and a Santa Claus parade. Several entertainment venues are also in the neighborhood. Hometown Arcade is known for its retro-style video games; Fallout Shelter has regular live music performances and a bar, and Monster Mini Golf offers an indoor glow-in-the-dark course and arcade.

Willett Pond and acres of parkland

Considered the prime recreation place in South Norwood, the 52-acre Endean Park has playgrounds, tennis courts, baseball fields used by Little Leagues, a disc golf course, a community garden and several miles of trails. On hot summer days, residents flock to the park’s Hawes Pool to cool off or sunbathe poolside. Francis William Bird Park in East Walpole offers similar amenities, and smaller pocket parks, such as Doherty Park, are spread throughout the community. Ellis Pond and Willett Pond, both west of the area, are boating and fishing hotspots. In addition to kayaking, canoeing, and paddleboarding, walking along the waterfront is also a popular pastime. Located east of the community, Brookmeadow Country Club and The Cape Club of Sharon have private 18-hole golf courses and serve as social venues for families who live in the area. When the weather isn’t ideal, residents can drive about 2 miles into downtown Norwood to use the indoor gym at the Norwood Civic Center.

Commuter train to Boston

U.S. Route 1, which turns into the Boston-Providence Turnpike in town, passes through South Norwood, and Interstate 95 borders the community on the east side. Both routes provide access to Boston, which is about 20 miles away. Norwood has three MBTA commuter rail stations, and Windsor Gardens is right in South Norwood. Commuters can take the Franklin/Foxboro Line and get to Boston’s South Station in approximately 40 minutes. Norwood Memorial Airport sits north of the area and offers charter flight services. Noise from the airport can be a concern for some residents. Boston Logan International Airport is less than 30 miles north of town, and Norwood Hospital is 2 miles north in Norwood Center.
