A Baltimore suburb with access to shopping and new homes

Carney is a Nottingham suburb north of Baltimore consisting of new constructions, 1950s Cape Cods and townhouses from the 1980s. “I think people move to Carney because you’re just outside the beltway with great access to the city and 695. A lot of people work in the city, and in my opinion, it’s not as expensive or as crowded as some of the other suburban areas,” says Fred Golding, a Realtor since 2003 and co-founder of GQ Home Team in the Baltimore area. As a local, Fred is active in the community and even plays in a jazz band that tours local venues. “It’s got a nice feel to it, a lot of regular, good-quality homes and construction. They may not be high-end mansions, but this is where a lot of first-time buyers get their start.” Locals can spend a day shopping at White Marsh Mall or picnic at the Loch Raven Reservoir. Carney homes prices average around $332,000 - over $100,000 more than in nearby Parkville and Overlea, but is half the price of homes in Hampton to the west. Residents celebrate the changing of the seasons at Weber’s Cider Mill Farm or sit down to dinner at McFaul’s Ironhorse Tavern. Students study in the Baltimore County Public School system, graded an overall B on Niche, and is the No. 4 best school district in the Baltimore area. Carney is about 17 miles north of downtown Baltimore, making it a possible neighborhood for those who commute.

Established residences dating back to the 1950s range from brick and wood-siding split-levels to ranch-style homes and smaller Cape Cods. Prices range from $250,000 to $550,000. Several creeks run through the neighborhood, such as Whitemarsh Run and Jennifer Branch. Houses near these bodies of water may experience rising water or flooding during rainy seasons.

Northwest of most homes, Loch Raven Reservoir is a local spot for picnics and hikes. Residents can boat and fish in the large artificial lake, as well as view several historic bridges, such as Yellott Bridge which was built in 1906. The expansive space provides a habitat for white-tailed deer, wild turkeys and songbirds that are popular among local birdwatchers. Also on the property, Long Island Farm is a historical landmark that can be dated back to 1764. North Plaza shopping mall and local restaurants

For a fun night out, folks head over to Das Bierhalle. “They’ve got great food, great beer. They can get busy, especially when there’s a sports event going on, but there’s really good food there,” Golding says. Residents can also head over to McFaul’s IronHorse Tavern on Cromwell Bridge Road, which serves old English-style pub food and hosts live music nights. Top Hat Sports Bar & Grill is a pool hall that hosts local tournaments. “I actually started going there when I was 21 or 18 just to shoot pool with friends when they had a league going on, Golding says. “Since then, they’ve done a lot of renovations with food, tables, bar space... It's a good local hangout.” The shopping centers of North Plaza and Perring Plaza over on East Joppa Road make up most of the shopping in Carney. Familiar big box stores like Home Depot, Safeway and Walgreens can be found here, along with regional restaurants like Urban Crab Shack or Mama Lucia. “Firehouse Tavern is another really good place,” Golding says. “A friend of mine used to own it – he was a firefighter, of course – and it's great for karaoke, hanging out and relaxing,” Golding says.
