Midcentury neighborhood just a few blocks from downtown

Harbor View is a residential area with a mix of suburban convenience and natural beauty. As part of the larger Oak Harbor community, it offers a range of housing options, shopping and dining, recreational activities and easy access to Whidbey Island Station. This neighborhood attracts a diverse population, including families, retirees and military personnel due to its proximity to Naval Air Station Whidbey Island. “It’s definitely one of the most convenient places to live on the island,” says Realtor Cristie Arnold of Re/Max Gateway, who has lived and worked in the area for over seven years. “Especially if you work on base or you just want to live near town. I mean, Oak Harbor isn’t a big city by any means, but there’s definitely a lot to do here. And you’re still just a short drive from hiking and fishing and all the more outdoorsy parts of Whidbey.”

Quaint midcentury homes

Most of the homes in Harbor View were built in the middle decades of the 20th century. The neighborhood’s housing inventory is composed almost entirely of midcentury ranch-style homes and cottages, making for a stark contrast with the two-story contemporary duplexes in the adjacent Victory Park neighborhood. Most homes in the area are between 1,200 and 2,500 square feet and sell for $400,000 to $600,000. They tend to sell within 15 days on the market, on average.

Wildcat TV features Oak Harbor High news

Most students in the area attend Oak Harbor Public Schools. Oak Harbor Elementary has an A-minus grade on Niche. North Whidbey Middle School and Oak Harbor High School both have a B-plus. The high school is known across Whidbey Island for its student-run cable channel, Wildcat TV, which features everything from news to theater productions.

Downtown Oak Harbor shopping

Harbor View is less than half a mile from downtown Oak Harbor, the largest retail area on Whidbey Island. The area has several grocery stores, including Safeway and Haggen, along with big box stores like Walmart and Home Depot. But downtown Oak Harbor’s real appeal lies in its locally owned shops and boutiques, which range from thrift stores like Garage of Blessings and Island Thrift to upscale home goods stores like Varner Candle Company. Dining options in Harbor View cater to a variety of tastes and preferences. Local favorites include Noe Jose Cafe, known for its casual atmosphere and Mexican-American menu, and Frasers Gourmet Hideaway, which offers a more upscale dining experience with a focus on Pacific Northwest cuisine. There are also numerous cafes and fast-food outlets scattered throughout the area.

Windjammer Park festivals

One of the highlights of living in Harbor View is the access to numerous parks and recreational facilities. Windjammer Park, located on the waterfront, features walking trails, picnic areas, playgrounds and a beach, plus excellent views of the harbor. The park also hosts community events and festivals throughout the year, such as the Oak Harbor Music Festival and Oak Harbor Carnival. Smaller city parks around the neighborhood include Volunteer Park, which is home to the local skate park and pool. For those interested in hiking and nature walks, preserves within a 10-mile drive include Deception Pass State Park, which has miles of trails and views of Whidbey Island’s most famous feature. Oak Harbor’s titular harbor, along with nearby portions of Puget Sound offer endless opportunities for kayaking, fishing and whale watching.

Less than a mile to the Harbor Station Transfer Center

Southeast Regatta Drive, which borders Harbor View to the east, connects the neighborhood to State Route 20, which in turn connects to Whidbey Island Station, Deception Pass and the mainland. It’s about 4 miles to the naval base, 10 miles to Deception Pass, and a little less than 30 miles to Mount Vernon, the largest city in the region. A number of bus routes, overseen by Island Transit, pass by the neighborhood, and it’s less than a mile to the Harbor Station Transfer Center, which serves as a central hub for North Whidbey Island’s buses. Harbor View is also one of the few neighborhoods on Whidbey Island that’s close enough to shopping and dining options to allow residents to get by without relying on their own vehicles.
