About Oak Hill, TN

About Oak Hill, TN

Home to the governor’s mansion, peaceful scenery and luxurious estates

Nashville might be the state capital, but the crown rests in Oak Hill several miles to the south. This community that blends suburban and rural traits has the distinction of being home to the Tennessee Governor’s Mansion, an impressive Georgian-style residence in a small city populated by multi-million dollar estates. “In Oak Hill, you typically have large, beautiful lots and landscapes within the rolling hills of Tennessee, and you’re so close to everything Nashville has to offer,” says Tyler Henson, a Realtor with Keller Williams and lead for the Henson Team, who’s made several sales in Oak Hill. “It’s a really quiet place to live that’s convenient to everything else. That’s really the biggest draw there.” Oak Hill maintains its unique setting with the help of decades old zoning that — with the exception of some grandfathered townhouses — only allows single-family houses, churches and schools. The community lies no more than 4 miles from the Nashville neighborhoods of 12 South and Green Hills, both renowned for their dining, shopping and entertainment scenes. Radnor Lake State Park, one of the region’s outdoor gems, is also right in the backyards of many Oak Hill residents.

Stately homes and mansions on spacious and lush lots

While not every house here would necessarily be considered stately, many can indeed be roughly between 4,000 and 10,000 square feet. Lots can commonly run from a third of an acre to a few acres. “It is more luxury homes in that area than anything else,” Henson says. Near the heart of the community, a few gates with stone and concrete columns guard extensive driveways running right along lush and expansive lawns enclosed by farm and wrought iron fencing. Near Radnor Lake State Park, dense groups of trees in front yards hide some houses from view. Many of the houses were built this century and a few of the styles include Tudor Revival, Traditional, transitional, contemporary, French Colonial and classic mansion. Brick exteriors are prevalent and occasionally mix with other sidings like stone and wood. Some homeowners can descend from their back porches and access amenities like stylish pools surrounded by stone walls and fountains. Price points can go from $1.7 million for a roughly 4,000-square foot home on a 1 acre lot to just over $5 million for a larger one occupying more than 4 acres.

Close to mix of shops, eateries and watering holes in 12 South

Although no businesses operate within Oak Hill, it’s not far from some of the region’s popular shopping and dining spots. Oak Hill residents can travel a few miles north to the 12 South neighborhood and walk along 12th Avenue, where they’ll find an eclectic mix of establishments that include some small Nashville-based chains. Those looking to add some modern American style to their wardrobe can stop by Tennessee’s only Buck Mason, where they can browse for new outfits around a vintage Porsche. Just across the street is Nashville’s first Edley’s Bar-B-Que location. The award-winning restaurant is known for smoking its meats on white oak. The barbecue restaurant neighbors the Filling Station, a bar inside a small brick shack. Patrons can order a beer on tap or pick a can or bottle from the packed shelves. Those meeting for brunch can go to the short row of bungalows right up the road and order a garden omelette and the seasoned Golden Monkey Latte at Frothy Monkey. A Publix and Kroger exist just below the Oak Hill’s southern bounds and neighbor cultural dining spots like Soy Teriyaki Bistro.

An outdoor gem in Radnor Lake State Park

The 1,368-acre Radnor Lake State Park on the southern end of Oak Hill is a destination for nature outings. Its visitors can take to the nearly 8-miles of trail to explore the forest that surrounds the eponymous lake. While at the park, they might spot an owl or a group of turtles walking up a partially submerged tree limb. The park’s Barbara J. Mapp Aviary Education Center puts on open houses twice a week. Visitors can get on the center’s boardwalk to view captive birds that include bald eagles. Other activities at the park include ranger-led canoe floats. Right on the edge of the park is the Vanderbilt Dyer Observatory, which is packed with avid stargazers on Telescope Nights. Outside of Oak Hill, Sevier Park in the 12 South neighborhood to the north is ideal for relaxing walks amid tall and mature trees. The park hosts the weekly 12 South Farmers Market from May through October.
