Residential and agricultural by the Stanislaus River

East Oakdale was formed at the site of a 19th-century Stanislaus River ferry crossing. It's more rural and less densely populated than neighboring Oakdale, a city that grew up near another ferry crossing. Oakdale proudly claims the title "Cowboy Capital of the World" and is renowned for hosting the region's first outdoor rodeo. East Oakdale has open space, parks, sizeable homes and a country club, whereas Oakdale has a downtown and tightly laid out streets. "East Oakdale is considered the county, but for mail and all that stuff, they call us Oakdale," says John Marsella, "Farmer John," the sole proprietor of Marsella Family Vineyards. "Everybody here is tied into town. Oakdale has a nice meld of urban and rural." He describes the area as unique and eclectic: "We have farmers who are farming nuts, we have cattlemen with cows and dairies, we have some big packing plants and a big seed company. There are people with all different likes and beliefs, but it's quite unified."

1990s to 2020s homes in East Oakdale

Though there are some older properties, including ranch-style homes, much of East Oakdale is made up of single-family home developments from the 1990s to 2020s. Some are in homeowners associations or gated, like Belsera, within walking distance of Oakdale Golf and Country Club. Some subdivisions have wide streets and tidy sidewalks; driveways and multicar garages are common. Prices typically range from $600,000 for homes under 2,500 square feet to $1.4 to $1.7 million for larger and newer custom homes, some on multiacre lots with pools and patios. "They are nice homes, like expensive estate homes," says Barbara Fox, a Realtor with Others Realty powered by Fathom, who has been in real estate for nearly two decades.

Oakdale Rodeo and Oakdale Cowboy Museum

The Oakdale Rodeo, held for over 70 years, takes place the second weekend of April. People don their best western gear—wranglers, cowboy boots, and classic ten-gallon hats — as they gather to cheer on saddle-roping, barrel races and bull riding. Alamosa Hat Works and Buckworth Western Wear are go-to's for a pre-rodeo shopping spree. The area's Old West history is displayed at the Oakdale Cowboy Museum. Period photographs, antique saddles and cowboy gear commemorate the cowboy legacy. Events promoted by the Oakdale Enrichment Society include the All-American Bash in June, which includes a parade and a cornhole tournament. The Small Town Christmas celebration is a downtown Oakdale gathering with a parade, Santa photo ops and the lighting of the town tree.

Oakdale Golf and Country Club, parks

The Oakdale Golf and Country Club has an 18-hole course, clubhouse and restaurant. There are a handful of membership options, golf instruction and family friendly events. Parks of East Oakdale are called "the string of pearls" due to their locations along the Stanislaus River. Recreational opportunities include kayaking, fishing and swimming. The Valley Oak Recreation Area has wooded areas of Fremont cottonwoods and California oaks and campsites along the river. Kerr Park has ball fields and is next to the Oakdale Sportsmen's Club. Hiking is a popular pastime in the area. "Knights Ferry Trail is one of the closest ones," Fox says. "One part goes up the hill, and one is flat and by the river. A lot of people river raft there." Knights Ferry Recreation Area, within 10 miles of East Oakdale, is the site of the Stanislaus River Salmon Festival, held in November. Salmon spawning, live entertainment and educational demos are part of the event.

Wine, apples, gouda and downtown Oakdale

To the east, tucked away on Orange Blossom Drive, is Marsella Family Vineyards, which offers wine tastings and tours. "We're the only tasting room in Stanislaus County," Marsella says. The Harvest Experience series gives attendees a chance to participate in wine-making. South of state Route 120 is Bloomingcamp Ranch, one of the first apple growers in the county and popular for its bake shop and farm stand. The closest shopping center to East Oakdale is Oak Ridge Plaza, which includes a Raley's supermarket and a Tractor Supply Co. Farther west is downtown Oakdale, a stroll-worthy area with historic buildings, boutiques and eateries, including House of Beef, serving steaks since 1979. There are also popular spots outside of downtown, including Oakdale Cheese & Specialties, known for its gouda. "Also, up along the highway is the 50's Road House, a really nice diner with an outside deck," Fox says.

State Routes 108 and 120, regional airports

State Routes 108 and 120 are in proximity to the community. It's about 20 miles to Modesto and about 100 miles to San Francisco; both are commuter locations. Though there is a Stanislaus Regional Transit Authority (StanRTA) bus route with service from Oakdale to Riverbank and Modesto, the line stops before reaching East Oakdale. General aviation services, like private transport flights, are at Oakdale Airport-O27, about 7 miles away. It's about 30 miles to Stockton Metropolitan Airport for regular passenger service.
