Upscale living and scenic beauty
Just over three decades ago, Claremont Hills was at the epicenter of the Oakland firestorm that destroyed many of the neighborhood’s homes. After rebuilding, the neighborhood is now known for its multi-million-dollar residences and scenic vistas. “It’s incredible to think that this area was rebuilt from nothing,” says Felicia Sunk, a ten-year resident of Claremont Hills who runs a local hiking club. “The natural beauty has completely recovered, and the neighborhood has the idyllic feel of a community that’s been around a long time.”

Luxury homes with steep prices
Houses in Claremont Hills are stacked across the rolling terrain along winding roads. Architecture styles span from elegant mid-century Craftsman homes that survived the fire to grandiose, modern estates built since the 1990s. Mediterranean design elements like terracotta roof tiles are common, as are expansive glass windows and porches to make the most of the vistas outside. Mature trees provide relief from the California sun and lend the neighborhood a natural, woodsy aesthetic. Home prices can range from $1.5 million for older, smaller homes to $3 million or more for luxury homes.

A premier hiking destination
Natural scenery and parks are abundant in Claremont Hills. The Claremont Canyon regional nature preserve offers expansive views and challenging hikes. “The trails there are really steep, which means it’s an excellent workout,” Sunk says. For a less ambitious workout, there’s the 1-mile loop at the 13-acre Garber Park, where Sunk says she likes to do interval training. One of the most popular hiking destinations is Grizzly Peak, a summit in the Berkeley Hills with panoramic views. “It’s the best place to watch the sun set,” Sunk says. Claremont Hills is also a short drive to the Sibley Volcanic Regional Preserve, where hikers can traverse the craggy inclines of an extinct volcano and seek out spiral stone sculptures, known as labyrinths, that are tucked away in the hills.
