Lakeside strolls and local dining in Grand Lake
Grand Lake is a lively Oakland neighborhood that often feels like a city within the city. “I love the neighborhood. It’s a great neighborhood as far as having everything you would want,” says Robin Donovan with the BloomHomes Team at Bay Area Portfolio KW, who has sold multiple homes here. “You have your coffee houses, libraries, everything you’d want access to close by.” Grand Avenue is lined with local shops and restaurants, while nearby Lakeshore Avenue has several more local businesses. Scenic parks, including the neighborhood’s namesake Lake Merritt, are just a short distance from the community. In addition to all the fun destinations nearby, essentials like groceries and pharmacies are also close to home.

A short walk to beloved Grand Avenue
The main avenues in Grand Lake are full of local shops and restaurants, including some that Donovan and her partner Stephen Bloom recommend. Bardo Lounge & Supper Club is a bar and restaurant noted for its midcentury modern aesthetic and seasonal menu featuring steak and seafood. The Star on Grand is a local pizza joint serving deep dish, Detroit-style and thin-crust pies. Other spots include coffee shops, Asian restaurants and burger joints. Grand Lake Theatre is a vintage movie theater that shows first-run movies and features a Wurlitzer Organ as pre-show entertainment on the weekends. Residents can stroll along the streets and browse stores like Walden Pond Books, Ordinaire Wine Shop and ReLove Oakland. There are chain retailers like Gap and Petco, while Trader Joe’s and Safeway serve the neighborhood’s grocery needs. Every Saturday, the Grand Lake Farmers Market brings over 100 vendors to Splash Pad Park, selling produce, coffee, pastries and more.

Easy access to one of Oakland's most popular parks
Just south of the neighborhood, Lake Merritt is considered the jewel of Oakland. “The lake is really a grand piece of Oakland. It’s been part of Oakland’s history for a long time. It has this necklace of lights surrounding it. There’s always runners and walkers around the lake,” says Donovan. The lights surrounding the water were installed in 1925 and consist of 3,400 bulbs. A 3-mile trail surrounds Lake Merritt, offering plenty of room for recreation. Several other spots along the lake have various activities, including tennis courts, kayak rentals, manicured gardens and playgrounds. The lake is also the oldest wildlife refuge in the United States, home to herons, egrets and ducks. North of the neighborhood, Morcom Rose Garden has thousands of exotic roses throughout its 8 acres. Visitors can stroll along the paths, viewing the flowers, reflecting pools and ornate staircases.

Plenty of ways to get around Grand Lake
Living in Grand Lake offers several ways to get around the neighborhood and the rest of the Bay Area. Multiple bus routes serve the community, offering public transportation to areas like downtown Oakland, Chinatown and San Francisco. Interstate 580 is south of the neighborhood, leading north to the Bay Bridge or south to Castro Valley. While the freeway is convenient, it gives off noise pollution in the neighborhood. Downtown Oakland is about a 2-mile drive, and the closest hospital is Kaiser Permanente Oakland Medical Center, about 1.5 miles away. The neighborhood itself is walkable and bikeable, making it easy to get to the local shops and restaurants. There are several hills, though, so the walks can be steep. Walking and biking may also be a better choice for residents who don’t want to deal with parking, as Grand Lake has limited spaces.
Grand Lake in Oakland offers vibrant living with quick access to I-580 for easy commutes.
19 Street BART Station serves as a vital transportation gateway for Grand Lake residents.
