A storied square in the East Bay
Named for the iconic naturalist writer, Jack London Square is a portside residential and commercial hub at the Oakland waterfront. While the neighborhood was originally a warehouse district, it’s since traded its wharves and depots for spacious condos, modern apartments and chic restaurants.
In the late 1800s, author and Bay Area native, Jack London was a familiar face at Heinold’s First and Last Chance Saloon, a waterfront cantina in the neighborhood that has since become a historic landmark. These days, Jack London Square is known for its mix of industrial and contemporary buildings near the Oakland Inner Harbor port terminals. The Port of Oakland is on the west side of the Square and is one of the largest in the country. “It’s really quiet compared to other nearby neighborhoods because it’s mostly condos. There are a lot of professionals and retirees there, and less families. The warehouses make it kind of like an urban jungle,” says Bach Nguyen, a Realtor with Jack London Square Realty.

Condos everywhere in Jack London Square
The district’s wide streets show off mid-rise apartment and condo complexes mixed in with snazzy shops and restaurants. The residential buildings have a modern look with giant windows that let in plenty of natural light and small balconies that overlook the streetscape. “The housing in Jack London Square is mainly condos,” says Anissa Burnley of KW Advisors Easy Bay, who was raised in the East Bay Area. “Everything’s right on the water at the Boardwalk, and the marina environment pulls everybody in.”
Most of the condos were constructed in the 2000s, and they have open floor plans and contemporary kitchens. Depending on the location, the condo's main views will be the rippling inner harbor and lit-up city skylines. Standard condos can range from studio to three-bedrooms with price tags ranging from $350,000 to $800,000. Luxury and penthouse condos often sell for more than $1 million.
Jack London Square is home to many newer condo projects and has become quite popular.

Movies and music at the Marina
Maritime enthusiasts can dock their yachts and dinghies at the Jack London Square Marina. With boats bouncing gently in the harbor waves, it’s a great place to relax and enjoy the waterfront views. At California Canoe & Kayak next door, you can set off for a guided sunset or evening tour of the Bay. It's also where you’ll find a breezy, palm tree-lined plaza with a statue of Jack London and a replica of the writer’s Yukon cabin built using some of its original floorboards. The Marina Lawn is the backdrop for the Square’s Waterfront Flicks free movie nights, showing family-friendly favorites. Restaurant Row is where residents gather to enjoy the Live Music Series during the summer. “Residents really enjoy walking from Jack London to Lake Merritt,” says Burnley. “Lakeside Park is there, and residents like boating on the lake.”

Wildlife on the lake
As a part of nearby Lake Merritt — the oldest wildlife refuge on the continent — Lakeside Park is one of the most popular parks in the area. Joggers and bikers can enjoy the paved trails while birdwatchers can take in the sights of the five bird islands. The 10-acre Children’s Fairyland engages the little ones with fairytale exhibits and talking storybooks, and the Lakeside Park Garden Center houses a koi pond in its Japanese garden. At the mouth of the Lake Merritt Channel, Estuary Park offers a multi-use sports field and a public boat launch. The park will be home to some new amenities in 2026 as part of the Estuary Park Project. The project is now underway, with plans to make the park more welcoming to pedestrians and bicyclists and to make it even more enjoyable for boaters and residents. Rowers can join youth and adult rowing programs through the Jack London Aquatic Center.

Oakland’s Fisherman’s Wharf
Residents of Jack London Square can enjoy a range of lively restaurants, breweries and other activities. “It’s right on the harbor, so most of Oakland’s seafood restaurants are in Jack London’s Square,” Burnley says. “It’s essentially Oakland’s Fisherman’s Wharf.” For an afternoon of fun games and frothy beers, head over to Plank, a spacious beer garden and restaurant with a sun-drenched outdoor patio, an 18-lane bowling alley and a bocce court. Farmhouse Kitchen Thai is a hip, colorful bistro specializing in aromatic dishes, fiery curries and fall-off-the-bone short rib plates. When it comes to modern Japanese cuisine, Yoshi’s is a popular venue. One of the newer restaurants in the Square, it’s known for its Japanese barbecue and live concerts featuring critically acclaimed artists like Angie Stone and Tito Puente, Jr. Apart from two dates right before Christmas and New Year’s Day, Jack London Square also hosts a year-round weekly farmer’s market on the waterfront where patrons and pick up items from local vendors.
