Lakeside living
A neighborhood with high-rise buildings overlooking Lake Merritt, Lakeside’s location is a draw for potential residents. It’s also next to downtown Oakland. “Lakeside gives the feeling of being in a big metropolis area,” says Renee Adelmann, owner of Bay Area Modern Real Estate, which has an office in Oakland. “And you also have nature because of the lake.” The primarily residential neighborhood is a short walk to the restaurants and businesses of downtown Oakland and an even quicker walk to Lake Merritt.

Mediterranean, Mexican, and Vietnamese food are just some of the flavors that diners can sample. Falafel Boy serves shwarma and kebabs, and a block away, Pho 84 patrons can be seen slurping down their broth at the end of a satisfying meal. There are restaurants on the water, too, like The Lake Chalet. This spot serves upscale seafood from its waterfront location, and small boats are often docked at the restaurant. Most can head to Nature’s Best Foods or Gourmet Market, both located in the neighborhood for groceries.

Lakeside Park is the biggest natural attraction near the neighborhood. The park is home to multiple gardens open for visitors, from the buzzing Bee Hotel garden to the tasty edible garden. Snow Garden is a little smaller than Lakeside Park, and much closer.
