City living meets serenity of nature in Oakland
Lincoln Highlands is a small East Bay residential enclave next to the Oakland Hills. This hilly neighborhood offers a blend of city energy with relaxing natural surroundings, as it sits between vast national parks and trendy shopping districts. "It's a very solid community. Down the hill, you've got the Dimond shopping district. Up the hill toward Joaquin Miller Park, it's like you're not even in the city anymore," says Deidre Joyner, a Realtor with Red Oak Realty, who has both lived in and sold homes in Oakland. The neighborhood is home to two prominent historical religious landmarks, both of which add to the area's overall emphasis on diversity, community spirit and communal efforts to keep Lincoln Highlands “clean and green.” With its quiet, tree-lined setting showcasing hillside views around every corner, Lincoln Highlands is only 5 miles from downtown Oakland and 15 miles from San Francisco.

Mid-century, Tudor and contemporary homes
Lincoln Highlands’ hilly and winding streetscapes showcase an eclectic display of housing, from Midcentury modern designs to colorful Tudor cottages and modern minimalist styles. Garages are commonly tucked below the main living area, making good use of this hilly landscape. "Many of the homes are from the 1940s and 1950s. There's not a ton of turnover, and people generally stick around once they move in," Joyner says. The neighborhood’s wide streets feature narrowly paved sidewalks and are lined with trees. California bay laurels and oaks mingle with various fruit trees known to bloom in the area’s sunny Mediterranean climate. While some homes sit on higher hill slopes than others, most homes have some form of backdrop views of the surrounding hillsides. Home prices range from $800,000 to $1.4 million, although a few new modern construction estates can go as high as $2.5 million. When homes here are further into the desert, there is an ever-present threat: "The closer you get to Highway 13, the closer you are to the earthquake fault zone," Joyner says.

Annual community festivals at neighborhood landmarks
The Oakland California Temple and historic Ascension Greek Orthodox Cathedral are prominent establishments in Lincoln Heights and are the site of many annual community events. The Oakland Greek Festival in May is a three-day celebration organized by the Ascension Greek Orthodox Cathedral. "Driving by, you'll hear great music. Many residents will walk to the festival because the church is so close and parking can be tight — it's a really big event for the community," Joyner says. Next door, the Oakland California Temple turns to winter with a huge holiday light show, and Joyner says their spring tulip planting is a sight to behold.
