Modern living in one of Oakland’s oldest neighborhoods
Piedmont Avenue is one of Oakland’s oldest neighborhoods, but its modern shopping areas and varied architectural style keep the neighborhood's heartbeat alive. Everything is centered around the central commercial area located along Piedmont Avenue, and the eclectic mix of shops and restaurants is within walking distance for many residents. “Piedmont Avenue feels like a little village,” says Lorri Rosenberg Arazi, Broker Associate with Vanguard Properties and resident of over 30 years. “It literally has everything you need, including fantastic grocery stores, restaurants, and a historic movie theatre that runs all the best shows.” The neighborhood is near downtown San Francisco and Oakland for those commuting into the city.

Piedmont Avenue is renowned for its commercial district, containing an eclectic mix of shops, restaurants, and galleries. “The area has restaurants with every type of cuisine and price range,” says Arazi. “It really is a great little village in the middle of a fabulous city.” Residents can sort through the stacks of vinyl at Mars Record Shop or peruse through the racks of vintage clothing at Mercy Vintage. Fenton’s Creamery was founded in Oakland in 1894 and is an institution famous for handcrafted ice creams and sauces. Pixar lovers will instantly recognize the establishment as it was featured at the end of the movie “Up.” Residents can head to The Wolf for California-American cuisine or Piedmont Grocery Co for fresh produce and goods. The Kaiser Permanente Oakland Medical Center sits at the bottom of Piedmont Avenue and is the flagship hospital of the largest managed care organization in the United States.

Craftsman-style homes in a competitive market
Housing in Piedmont Avenue dates back to the early 1900s, with some midcentury builds mixed throughout. Craftsman-style homes are the predominant housing type in the neighborhood and often feature small front porches with manicured landscaping. Piedmont Avenue has numerous multifamily options ranging from townhouses to condos. “There are very few listings because the market is so competitive,” says Arazi. “People who are looking to buy here have to wait.” Smaller bungalows sell for around $1.5 million, while larger Victorian builds can top $2 million.

Guided tours of the grandiose crypts and “Millionaire’s Row” are available to the public, and many residents use the space to jog or walk their dogs. Tennis players can work on their backhand at the courts found at Mosswood Park. The park also has baseball diamonds and a playground.
