Rockridge is a one-stop shop
With College Avenue within walking distance, residents of Oakland’s Rockridge neighborhood are never more than a short stroll away from grabbing groceries, picking out new shoes or perusing the latest editions at mainstays like Pegasus Books. “It’s a neat thing to have a business district embedded in a neighborhood, and people really take advantage of living in a place where they can get so much on foot,” says Amy Thomas, who purchased Pegasus Books from the previous owner after working there herself for 15 years. “We can’t imagine being anywhere else.”
Although most of the homes that branch out from College Avenue have stood since the 1920s, recent renovations ensure these compact bungalows are well worth the million-dollar price tags, attracting young families drawn by the neighborhood’s proximity to highly ranked schools such as Oakland Technical High. Apartments and townhouses also provide options for recent college graduates. Kids always enjoy a trip to the playground at FROG Park, while avid golfers praise the neighborhood’s proximity to the Claremont Country Club. From its ample public transportation options to its veritable buffet of walkable shops and restaurants, Rockridge offers a taste of suburban Oakland while staying close to its urban roots.

Exploring College Avenue
College Avenue is truly the centerpiece of the Rockridge neighborhood, home to everything from locally owned restaurants to specialty boutiques to family medical providers. Salons, yoga studios, bookstores, international eateries and even a library coexist on this mile-long stretch, so it’s no surprise that locals and visitors alike end up spending hours exploring the avenue. And although nightlife waned a bit following COVID-19 pandemic shutdowns, new events and live music are helping to reinvigorate the district. “It’s a neat place, and it remakes itself over and over again. It was very quiet during the pandemic, but it’s coming back,” Thomas says.
On the second Saturday of each month, College Avenue comes to life during Rock-N-Stroll, which features local bands, vendors and restaurant tastings. “We always do better on those days,” says Thomas. The Rockridge Improvement Club is also known to host weekly trivia, Skee-Ball and karaoke nights, and patrons rave about the bar’s unique cocktails.
Notable and enduring spots along College Avenue include Rockridge Café and Zachary’s Chicago Pizza, an employee-owned favorite since the 1980s that’s been honored hundreds of times for its stuffed Chicago-style pies. Fine dining also has its place here, with recent additions such as A16 offering upscale Italian dishes and wine pairings. And for the home chef, fresh produce, seafood and meat are always available at Market Hall Foods, or there’s a Trader Joe’s right down the street.

Renovated 1920s architecture
Constructed primarily in the 1920s, Rockridge’s homes offer a historical charm with colorful facades and cozy covered entrances. Renovated Craftsman-inspired builds and California bungalows are common, but sizes can range drastically from 1,000 to 3,000 square feet. While smaller, two-bedroom homes can list for around $1.8 million, spacious five-bedroom builds often hit the market for closer to $2.5 million. A few condos along Broadway Terrace provide additional two-bedroom options just under the million-dollar mark, and apartment buildings are popular with recent UC Berkeley grads.
For residents needing a smaller home and budget, condos can be found in the area.

At the Temescal Regional Recreation Area, parkgoers often spend sunny days on the sandy beach or picnicking after a hike along shoreside trails.
