A village with oceanfront state parks in Grays Harbor County

An afternoon spent on the never-ending Pacific Ocean — the scent of salt in the air, kites flying in the wind and the sound of waves colliding with the shore. This is daily life in Grayland, a village on the coast of Washington state. “Grayland has the most popular camping grounds in the state right on the beach,” says broker Jennifer Custer who works with Windermere Real Estate Westport and has over a decade of experience in the area. The waterfront village, known for its state parks, is home to less than a thousand people who can commute 20 miles to Aberdeen. But Grayland locals have everything they need on State Route 105: a grocery store, a neighborhood pub and cranberries. The area’s cranberry bogs and cranberry museum set it apart from other beachfront communities in the area.

Grayland Beach State Park and Twin Harbors State Park

Grayland Beach State Park, nearly 600 acres of land, gives residents and tourists an expansive sandy beachfront on over a mile of Washington state coastline. There aren’t any bluffs this far south, but it has windy conditions ideal for kite flying and many shellfish to find. “That’s where the best clam digging is, better than Westport. And you can drive on Grayland Beach year-round. People go down there to drive and park, picnic or razor clam dig,” Custer says. Those passing through can stay in yurts on campsites separated by evergreen trees. At Twin Harbors State Park, there are campsites for cabins and RVs secluded in the woods, where people can walk along trails that lead to grass-covered sand dunes. Visitors with four-wheel drives can drive and park on the sand, although they should be careful to avoid getting stuck.

Ranch-style homes and beach houses in Grayland

Centered around State Route 105, Grayland has small businesses and houses interspersed on the main road. “Westport is a city with water and sewer. When you get into Grayland, it's more rural. Everyone's on septics out there,” Custer says. The houses on the thoroughfare often have lots separated by pine trees, while beachfront homes tend to have more spacious yards with sand dunes out back. They also have features like easy walks to the water and decks with ocean views. Ranch-style homes range from $250,000 to $400,000, while beach houses with ocean views range from $550,000 to $750,000.

Retail and a neighborhood pub on State Route 105

Because it’s a more rural area, Grayland doesn’t have a lot of retail, but residents can find what they need on the community’s main road: State Route 105. At Grayland Local Bar & Grill, patrons can expect a relaxed pub atmosphere with pool tables. As its name suggests, locals gather at the eatery, best known for its clam chowder. The Local Store provides produce and groceries, while those looking for wine and cheese selections can visit Grayland Beach Outfitters.

Cranberry attractions

As an area known for its cranberry bogs, one of Grayland’s biggest attractions is the Cranberry Museum. It features an exhibit on the history of cranberry harvesting and a gift shop that sells fresh berries. The annual Cranberry Harvest Festival, a weekend-long event, recently celebrated 30 years. It offers tours of cranberry bogs, a cook-off using cranberries and a parade at night.

Ocosta public schools

The community is served by the Ocosta School District, which earns a C-plus grade according to Niche. Ocosta Elementary School also has a C-plus rating. Ocosta Junior/Senior High School serves middle through high school levels and has a C-plus rating. The school offers courses from financial algebra, which factors math into real world spending, to Photo II, where students can learn how to use photo editing software.

20 miles west of Aberdeen

Grayland is a car-dependent community. It's located about 70 miles from Olympia via State Route 8. About 20 miles from Aberdeen, residents can get to the town center via State Route 105. Those who prefer public transit can catch a Grays Harbor Transit bus. For a nearby hospital, Harbor Regional Health Emergency Department is 20 miles away in Aberdeen. The Seattle–Tacoma International Airport is about 120 miles away.
