Spending every day on Okauchee Lake
Okauchee Lake's natural landscape attracts a peaceful yet active lifestyle in the heart of Wisconsin's Lake Country. Expansive lakes and green spaces offer year-round recreation, from boat racing to cross-country skiing. Acres of land, dense forests and winding rural roads separate homes, but residents keep a tight-knit community, even between neighborhoods. "It doesn't matter which community I go to in Lake Country, there's always somebody I run into who I know, says Erik Mullett, president of the Okauchee Area Business Association (OABA). "It's just a large network of people that are almost like family." With a Cap Index crime score of 1, compared to the national average of 4, neighbors enjoy hiking, boating and fishing together before ending the day at a locally owned restaurant on the water. Small businesses are supported by organizations like the OABA, which seek to increase commercial growth, tourism and economic success throughout Lake Country.
Boats, bullheads and biking Nashotah Park trails
The neighborhood has several lakes, and Okauchee Lake is the largest. Along its 18 miles of shoreline are private docks, public piers, boat slips and small watercraft launches. Ski, wake, pontoon and even houseboats coast around all summer. People take sailing courses or join adult racing fleets at Okauchee Lake Yacht Club. "The size of the lakes kind of dictates what you can do on them, and some are a little bit weedier with lily pads and cattails," Mullet says. "At Beaver Lake, you can only bring carry-on boats like kayaks, and some lakes don't even have launch sites." Fishing happens year-round, as many anglers set up tents on frozen-over lakes to ice-fish in the winter. Bullheads, catfish and rock bass can be caught anytime, but species like largemouth bass, northern pike and walleye have seasonal restrictions.Away from the water, Nashotah Park offers 444 acres of forest and grassland trails. People visit the paths to hike, bike and cross-country ski among the parks' rolling hills and wetlands. Visitors also enjoy identifying songbirds and taking pets to the enclosed dog park. The park is accessible through an annual membership or a daily entrance permit.
Million-dollar lakeside homes and spread-out subdivisions
No matter where people live, Mullett says access to the lakes isn't restricted to residents. Even so, lakeside homeowners have the advantage of private docks and 24/7 waterfront views. Homes are relatively new, with many built in the 2000s and 2010s, and the neighborhood's average home value is well above national and Milwaukee Metro Area averages. Inland bungalows, Colonial-inspired homes, ranch-style homes and condos range between $250,000 and $650,000. Custom-built multistory lake houses start as low as $800,000 and reach up to $2.5 million. Large lots paired with rolling hills and dense tree cover create added privacy between neighbors. Homes in inland subdivisions stay connected through wide rural roads and walking trails.
Docking at Golden Mast Restaurant’s pier for dinner
The Lake Drive and Wisconsin Avenue intersection is considered the community's downtown. It's home to several restaurants, and some have designated pier parking. "Instead of driving, a lot of people take their boats and kayaks right up to restaurants on the lake," Mullett says. People lounge in colorful deck chairs at Foolery's on Okauchee Lake, while Weissgerber's Golden Mast Inn offers a more upscale dining experience. Smoke on the Water BBQ pairs a laidback menu with live music and bingo nights. People visit Northside Prop Shop or Musky Mike's Bait & Tackle for boating and fishing essentials. Away from downtown, people pick up groceries at Fox Bros. Piggly Wiggly or explore the racks at MayHouse Collection. The OABA beautifies downtown and brings more business through incentive programs. "We just rolled those out this last year, and immediately, we've seen people start to respond to them," Mullett says. The loan program offers low interest rates to expanding businesses, and grants help improve facades with new signs, awnings and seasonal decorations.
Supporting trade skills at Oconomowoc High School
Most of the neighborhood is under the Oconomowoc Area School District, but a small portion is zoned for two other districts. Most students attend Meadow View Elementary School, followed by Nature Hill Intermediate School. The schools have B and A-minus Niche ratings, respectively. Next is Oconomowoc High School, which has an A-minus. The school features an on-site greenhouse, a 76-acre farm and a trade program where students partner with a local home builder to construct a home. The school district supports students pursuing trade education through its scholarship fund.
Riding UTVs down rural roads
Rural roads weave through the community. County Trunk Hwy K and State Route 16 are considered the major thoroughfares, and Brown Street crosses the neighborhood to connect them. "We don't have a lot of congestion anywhere," Mullett says. "It's 10 minutes at most to get in and out of here." He also says that while the area is heavily car-dependent, many people take golf carts, UTVs and boats to get around. Residents are 4 miles from ProHealth Oconomowoc Memorial Hospital and 37 miles from Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport.
Lake residents raise money for the Fourth of July fireworks
Neighbors gather throughout the year to socialize. Okauchee Street Dance puts feet on the street with live music, local food and kid-friendly activities. The Okauchee Dinner Dance is the OABA's largest fundraising event. Attendees enjoy a filet and lobster dinner, a live band and a silent auction. All proceeds support the neighborhood's business district. Seasonal events include Fourth of July fireworks at The Golden Mast Restaurant, which hosts the annual Living on the Lake Resident Party. In summer, Okauchee Lake Yacht Club takes over the lake to host its annual Championship C Scow Blue Chip Regatta. Racing starts Saturday morning and continues through the weekend.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
