Greenway Park-Lindberg near parks and schools
The Odessa neighborhood of Greenway Park-Lindberg may not have an actual park, but there is a popular, family-friendly one less than a mile away. McKinney Park hosts Starbright Village, a holiday lights festival every December, and has a sprayground in the summer. The community is home to Zavala Elementary School and close to Ector College Prep Middle School, so kids are often seen walking to and from home with their backpacks. At the end of the day, families can get dinner at one of the many locally owned restaurants along nearby South Crane Avenue, as well as Downtown Odessa, about 2 miles away. There are a couple of houses of worship nearby as well, including St. Anthony’s Catholic Church. “For family, leisure and activity, that is a good area,” says Meagan Mendenhall, events manager for the city of Odessa.

A winter wonderland in West Texas
McKinney Park, about 1 mile away, is home to Starbright Village. “That is one of our biggest events,” says Meagan Mendenhall, events manager for the city of Odessa. This month-long event starts with a tree-lighting ceremony. School choirs sing carols and local reporters emcee the event, where attendees can try food trucks and spread holiday cheer with their friends. Then, the mayor counts down from 10, and a towering tree lights up with a glittering display. “I’m actually the one who pushes the button,” Mendenhall says. The park stays lit up with over 300,000 lights that folks can either drive or stroll through every night in December. Santa sets up shop in Santa Land every Friday and Saturday before Christmas, giving kids the opportunity to share their wish list. La Margarita Festival Grounds is an event venue less than 1 mile away, which hosts concerts, conferences and markets.
Families enjoy nearby McKinney Park
When it's not home to Odessa’s winter wonderland, McKinney Park is a bustling park. “Personally, I think McKinney Park is one of the best parks for families,” Mendenhall says. Kids can splash around the sprayground or play on the swings before joining their parents at the picnic table. The park also has basketball courts and baseball fields. The Comanche Trail is a 2-mile-long paved trail lined with trees, contrasting with the desert-like landscape around it. There is an 18-hole disc golf course along the trails. “Every time I go to the trail, there’s people playing,” Mendenhall says. The Ector County Public Library is in Downtown Odessa and hosts story times and book clubs for readers of all ages.

Mid-20th century homes for under $200,000
Sidewalks line the wide streets and oak trees dot the grassy front lawns, which some residents decorate with an eclectic mix of ornaments and plants. Although every property has a wide driveway, there's also street parking. Most homes are modest ranch styles, and some traditional cottages are scattered throughout. Single-family houses average about 1,350 square feet and typically range between $100,000 and $175,000. “The prices are lower because these houses are older,” says Realtor Dee Alanis with Strait A Real Estate. Many houses were built in the 1940s and 1950s.
