The neighborhood is also home to two elementary schools and next to a handful of restaurants, as well as the Ector County Coliseum. Access to the EZ-Rider bus system, the football program at nearby Permian High School and proximity to Ratliff Ranch Golf Links add to the neighborhood’s appeal.

Ranch-style and new-build contemporary homes

Properties in Sherwood are mainly brick, ranch-style or new-build contemporary homes with one- to two-car garages. Some homes have carports, while some have U-shaped driveways. Ranch-style homes have sold for between $100,000 and $290,000, while the new-build contemporary homes have gone for between $250,000 and $340,000. “It’s a very strong market,” says John Herriage, a Realtor with Copper Key Realty. “It’s great for first-time homebuyers.” Most streets of Sherwood are lined with sidewalks, making the area walkable for most residents.

Six-time state champion Permian High football program

Residents of Sherwood attend schools within the Ector County Independent School District. The neighborhood has two kindergarten-through-fifth-grade institutions, Goliad Elementary and Ross Elementary. Both schools earn a C grade from Niche. Those students feed into Wilson & Young Medal of Honor Middle School, which also receives a C from Niche. To finish their K-through-12 experience, students head to Permian High School, whose football program has won six Texas state titles and was the subject of the book and film “Friday Night Lights.” Permian High earns a C-plus grade from Niche. For private school options, Sherwood Christian Academy is just north of the neighborhood and serves kindergarten through 12th grade. The school has yet to be graded by Niche.

EZ-Rider bus system access in Sherwood

Residents of Sherwood are 4 miles from Downtown Odessa and 21 miles from Midland. The Midland Odessa Urban Transit District bus system, otherwise known as EZ-Rider, can be used from the stop at the intersection of Dixie Boulevard and 46th Street. The Midland International Air & Space Port is a 12-mile drive from Sherwood. The nearest hospital is the Medical Center Hospital, 4 miles away.

Adventure awaits at Sherwood Park’s Aquatic Center

Residents have access to several area parks. At the center of the neighborhood is Sherwood Park. “Kids and families can walk to the park, a big advantage,” Herriage says. Local athletes use the park for its baseball fields, sand beach volleyball courts, tennis courts and soccer fields. In the summer, people head to Sherwood Park’s Aquatic Center, a public pool with slides, playscapes and a diving board. There is also a skate park and a playground. Next to Sherwood Park is the Sherwood Community Center, used for various community events throughout the year. Just 2 miles south of the neighborhood is Jim Parker Park, which has basketball courts, baseball fields, tennis courts and a playground. Optimist Park is 2 miles west of Sherwood and has tennis courts and a playground.

Seafood selections south of Sherwood

Sherwood has several restaurants south of the neighborhood along 42nd Street. “Big Daddy’s Grill & Bar has been there for a long time,” Rosas says. “They have good catfish.” Big Daddy’s serves a selection of seafood, chicken, ribs and burgers. Another seafood option, Crab City Seafood and Wing Bar, is right across Dixie Boulevard. This spot offers seafood options like oysters and catfish, along with other favorites like wings and chicken sandwiches. Next door is Volcano Korean BBQ, which sells barbecue and a selection of sushi rolls. For shopping, Music City Mall – anchored by stores like JCPenney and Burlington – is 3 miles west of the neighborhood. Grocery shopping can be done at the local H-E-B, 2 miles away.

The Permian Basin Fair & Expo at the Ector County Coliseum

Sherwood is 1 mile east of the Ector County Coliseum, home to various events throughout the year. The Coliseum hosts the annual Permian Basin Fair & Expo, held around Labor Day. Ratliff Ranch Golf Links

Golfers can make the 3-mile drive north to the Ratliff Ranch Golf Links. The public course has 18 holes and hosts tournaments throughout the year. The club also has an attached restaurant, Linx Bar & Grill, where folks can grab a drink and a meal after their round.
