About 5 miles from Downtown Odessa and just south of the University of Texas Permian Basin sits the suburban neighborhood of University Gardens. “It’s a great neighborhood for raising a family and has several cul-de-sacs,” says John Herriage, a Realtor with Copper Key Realty, who served on the Odessa Chamber of Commerce. High school students attend Permian High, known for its football program, which brings the community together each Friday in the fall. When not at school, children enjoy UTPB Park, just north of the neighborhood, for its playground, splash pad and public pool. The proximity to many shopping and dining options, Downtown Odessa and a couple of golf courses add to University Gardens’ appeal.

As homebuyers walk down the sidewalk-lined streets of University Gardens, they’ll see various home types. These homes sit on tight lots, with homes taking up much of the space, but some have managed to fit an inground pool or entertaining space in the backyard. The storied football program at Permian High School

Residents in University Gardens are assigned to the Ector County Independent School District. Starting in Pre-K, children attend Blanton Elementary School, which earns a B-minus grade from Niche. From there, students move on to Nimitz Junior High before attending Permian High, both receiving a C-plus mark from Niche. Permian High School is known for its storied football program, which has won six Texas state titles. The community comes together on Friday nights in the fall to attend games.

Summer fun at ETPB Park’s splash pad and public pool

When locals want to get out and enjoy the outdoors, they don’t have to travel far. The UTPB Park, just north of the neighborhood, has a playground, splash pad and a public pool, perfect for a summer weekend. The park also has a few walking trails that wind through nature and the University of Texas Permian Basin campus. Memorial Garden Park has a pond with a walking trail looping around it for a serene stroll. The Odessa Mountain Bike Park is 3 miles northeast of University Gardens and is perfect for those seeking an adrenaline rush. The park has mountain biking trails for a variety of rider skill levels.

At the northwest border of the neighborhood sits a shopping center, which includes a Hobby Lobby and an Ace Hardware, both valuable for home projects. Residents enjoy starting their day at Jack N Jill Donuts, which has been serving their recipe since 1960. They also serve hot and cold coffee drinks. For barbecue and ribs, locals head over to Jack Jordan’s Barbecue, which serves a variety of meats on sandwiches and by the pound. Fireworks at the 4th of July Fandango

While University Gardens doesn’t have its own neighborhood events, locals enjoy heading to get-togethers put on by the City of Odessa. The 4th of July Fandango is one of the most popular events the city puts on every year. It starts with a car show, a market, and food vendors and finishes with fireworks. Over 30,000 people went to the event last year.

Golf options nearby

University Gardens is 5 miles from the Odessa Country Club. The club is member-by-invitation-only but offers two golf courses and facilities for working out, tennis and swimming. There is Ratliff Ranch Golf Links for a public golf course, which is 6 miles north of the neighborhood. Ratliff Ranch has an 18-hole course along with a Linx Bar & Grill for those looking for a meal after a long day on the course.
