Centrally located Ogden neighborhood
West Ogden’s landscape is a mosaic of train tracks, green spaces and industrial areas, all brought together by residential streets. Less than a mile from downtown Ogden, the neighborhood is lined with century-old homes that have smaller price tags compared to houses on the eastern side of the city. “People are starting to realize what a steal these houses are, and they’ve started selling faster because of their potential for renovations,” says Jenny Erb, owner of 801 Realtors, who has almost 15 years of experience.
Streets of single-story homes
Homes in West Ogden are lined along gridded residential streets that are narrow and lack sidewalks in some areas. Single-story homes are common in the neighborhood and come in a variety of styles. Minimal traditional cottages and bungalows with front porches sit next to ranch-style homes. Some houses were built in the 1910s, while others were constructed in the 1940s. These properties span 700 to 1,800 square feet and prices range from $275,000 to $375,000. “The area’s been cleaned up a lot. People feel safe walking through the neighborhood, and it’s a close community,” says Real Estate Agent Bret Rackham with RE/MAX Associates, who has almost 10 years of experience.
Neighborhood parks and historic reenactments
West Ogden has multiple green spaces offering abundant outdoor recreation. Fort Buenaventura Park takes up most of the neighborhood’s eastern area. “It’s like going into the wilderness, but you’re in the middle of the city. It’s got rivers there and everything,” Rackham says. “We used to go there as scouts.” Located on the site of the first Anglo settlement in the Great Basin, the park features a model of the original fort with Mountain Men reenactors who mimic the traders and trappers who lived in the area in the 1850s. Other facilities of the park include picnic pavilions, a fishing pond, group campsites and The Fort Disc Golf Course, which has 18 holes. The Ogden City Dog Park sits to the north of the area and has an agility course. Visitors can also access the Weber River from Fort Buenaventura Park for kayaking and other activities. “I know a lot of people who like living over there because they can just walk over to the river, drop a line and go fishing,” Rackham says.
Down the road, West Ogden Park has large grassy fields and a playground with a climbing wall. Observatory Park is a large open space featuring the Weber County Archery Park, which has both indoor and outdoor ranges and offers classes for beginners and league play.
Getting educated in Ogden
Children living in West Ogden can attend schools within the Ogden City School District. Odyssey Elementary School, for kindergarten through sixth grade, and George Washington High School, which teaches seventh through 12th grade, both earn C grades from Niche. Additionally, George Washington offers a 90 Ninety 1+ Club that encourages school attendance through field trip rewards to places such as the Hogle Zoo and Hansen Planetarium.
Downtown’s nearby shopping and dining
Although the neighborhood itself lacks commercial areas, West Ogden is about a mile from downtown’s shopping and dining options, which line the Historic 25th Street. Local shops include clothing boutiques like Reborn Vintage and novelty stores like Lavender Vinyl. Table Twenty Five is an upscale bistro serving modern American dishes with locally sourced ingredients. No Frills Diner specializes in breakfast, while Lucky Slice Pizza has both single slices and whole pies. Three miles north at the intersection of Wall Avenue and West 1200 Street, there are multiple well-known retailers such as Ross, PetSmart and WinCo Foods. Fast food options in the area includes Zaxby’s and Little Caesars. Newgate Mall is about 3 miles south and has a Costco, as well as brand name stores such as Dillard’s and Bath & Body Works.
Traveling in and around West Ogden
With West Ogden’s industrial landscape and open spaces, a vehicle is required for getting around. Interstate 15, also known as Veterans Memorial Highway, runs along the west of the neighborhood and leads south to Salt Lake City, about 38 miles away. The Utah Transit Authority also provides public transportation with bus stops along 24th Street. About 3 miles south of West Ogden, the Ogden-Hinckley Regional Airport provides commercial and charter flights. Despite the multiple tracks running along the eastern area of the neighborhood, there are no outlets for train rides. Union Station is the city’s former train depot that has been converted into multiple museums, such as the Browning-Kimball Classic Car Museum and the John M Browning Firearms Museum.
Downtown Ogden’s 25th Street attractions
With Historic 25th Street only about a mile away from West Ogden, it’s a short commute to take part in the city’s festivals and attractions. “People can walk across the bridge or ride their bikes and go to events downtown,” Rackham says. The Ogden Amphitheater hosts live music concerts and other events.
