Unique restaurants and businesses under neon signs in downtown OKC

Situated between the heart of downtown Oklahoma City and the Midtown area, Automobile Alley is a neon-lit neighborhood with an artistic flair. Known as “A-Alley” for short, the area was once a hub for the city’s car industry, hosting 52 different dealerships by the early 1920s. A mix of eclectic local businesses and the Oklahoma Contemporary Arts Center would move in during the new millennium, transforming A-Alley into a small but vibrant cultural hub within the tapestry of downtown OKC. A mix of old and new neon signs along Broadway Avenue pay homage to the neighborhood’s past, while contemporary murals, shops and restaurants point to its evolving identity.

Fun shops and fresh dining in converted car dealerships

Local restaurants and specialty retailers make up most of the local business scene in Automobile Alley, with many having neon signage as a nod to the area’s car-centric past. Parlor OKC hosts playful dining concepts like Pachinko’s Asian fusion meals, Just Put an Egg on It’s breakfast dishes and Bad Nonna’s scratch-made pasta in a casual food hall setting. Red PrimeSteak serves contemporary New American steakhouse entrees in the city’s former Buick building from 1911. Hatch Early Mood Food offers all-day brunch in a modern industrial space. Stops like Plenty Mercantile, Common Dear and Shop Good offer prime locations for gift shopping. For everyday goods, Walmart Neighborhood Market and Family Dollar stores are available less than 4 miles away from the neighborhood to the northwest.

Businesses turn on the high beams for the holidays

Year-round stops for nights out include Factory Obscura’s Mix Tape for immersive art installations themed after multiple music genres. Residents can also visit the Sidecar Barley & Wine Bar, which offers elevated pub fare, cocktails and an extensive beer menu, and Skydance Brewing, Oklahoma’s first Native-owned brewery. Every December, Automobile Alley becomes a bright spot in OKC – literally. During the annual Lights on Broadway festivities, the area’s existing neon signage is accompanied by additional lighting to give the façades nearby a distinctive glow, perfect for the holiday season. Locals can take photos with Santa, enjoy live music performances and stop into the businesses around A-Alley for special promotions.

Rare condos in the heart of the city

Automobile Alley’s past and present focus on retail and other businesses has left residential options in the area limited, but eagle-eyed residents can still find a small mix of condominiums and homes nearby, along with some apartment units. One-bedroom condo units in the area start near the $270,000 mark, while rare large homes nearby can go for more than $1.2 million. Most locals in the area rent their homes, with only 9% of the local population owning a home or condo in A-Alley.

Bold outdoor art on dog walks

Distinctive outdoor art brings the Campbell Art Park to life in A-Alley. Sitting just outside the Oklahoma Contemporary, residents can find a mix of murals and sculptures within the green space surrounding the museum. Close to the south end of the area, the Edward L. Gaylord Downtown YMCA offers a gym, exercise equipment and an indoor pool. Locals are also 1 mile away from Myriad Botanical Gardens, which offers fountains, a children's garden, a carousel, the Crystal Bridge Conservatory and more on 15 acres of green space. More OKC leisure areas, such as Robert S. Kerr Park, are available to the south of the neighborhood.

Speedy travels to all things Oklahoma City

Car culture may be a key element of A-Alley’s identity, but residents living nearby won’t have to worry about driving everywhere to get around. The neighborhood offers reliable methods for alternative transportation across the OKC area, including a light rail stop at Broadway and 8th Street, bus stops along Broadway Avenue and 4th Street, and a dedicated bike lane on Oklahoma Avenue. Residents driving across the city can travel with the Interstate 235 highway to the neighborhood’s immediate east. For medical concerns and emergencies, the University of Oklahoma Medical Center is 1 mile east of the neighborhood. Domestic and international flights depart from Will Rogers World Airport, 12 miles southwest of Automobile Alley.

Driven charter education in a distinctive learning environment

Rex Charter Elementary School, which offers a unique curriculum integrating the surroundings of downtown Oklahoma City into the learning environment. The school holds a student-teacher ratio of 17:1 and holds an A grade on Niche. Older students go to Moon Middle School and Douglass High School, which both hold C-minus ranks on Niche.
